AOL signs off when downloading email
Heyhowsitgoing...
I have AOL 9.0 optimized. Never had any issues with it until the last month or two, when every once in awhile it would sign off when I'd download an email attachment. It will start to download, but then just say "Goodbye" and sign off, then restart. I can continue the download, but it sometimes takes 4 or 5 attempts. But, then the file will be corrupted. Starting this week, I can't download any email attachments at all. Does it every time. I tried doing a lite registry sweep, and it worked once, but not since. I think it's a conflict, but I'm not sure how to go about troubleshooting. AOL help just told me to re-install, which I already did, to no avail. Any ideas? |

Hi, Wooden,
I had to use yr name 2 find this. 1) Is your system infected? Have you visited Panda or Trend Micro Housecall 2 make sure it's not??? 2) Sounds from other thread that AOL is still your ISP. Wut kind of connection do U have? 3) Go to AOL toolbar, choose "settings" from large menu choose "Personal Storage." In window, use lower arrow to empty your art cache....lower it from 60 where it should B to bottom which will be 35. Log off AOL. Log back on....repeat steps above and then raise the number to 60. then try to send yourself a mail with uploaded attachment and C if you can download it. Actually you ight try this first...then we might know more re when and where the "corruption" occurs. 4) Download and install AOL Computer Checkup. Choose One click fixes component.....go thru all the options. This may help too if other things do not. 5) When you said you reinstalled, did U mean via #4....or via 9.0 CD? 6) Have U checked your browser settings? Run Hijack this? Opened task Mgr during attempted downloading 2 C wut up? Where is your backup my personal storage set at? 7) If I may suggest...and I osted review of this here; Lnderman follow up and sent beserk with amazement, ywes I was tester for this puppy over months....you might download the free version of Advanced windows Care, configure the settings for your system & ISP connection, run it and C if this fixes things.....it wouldn't surprise me. http://iobit.com/ I am floundering I know....but one of the above may nail the issue (or not)....and, I am sure, someone above my paygrade...I don't even have a paygrade.... will weigh in. Beauty! OK...
1) System is clean. I have ZoneAlarm Security Suite; scanned clean. Same with my Spyware Dr. HijackThis! clean. (I'm quite familiar with malware issues and repair methods - no problems down that road) 2) Cable / Broadband 5) Installed from AOL 9.0 CD-ROM; applied updates As for the other points, I shall try them out... but later. I'm quite busy this weekend, so I'll do it when I have more time. Be patient - I'll repost when I get 'er done. Your input is muchly appreciated - muchas gracias! |

OK, things changed (don't they always?) and I had some time, so here you go.
3) I followed your instructions, but I forgot to reset to 60 after signing back on. The att. downloaded fine. However, the other 6 I have waiting wouldn't at all. Put the settings back to 60, still no go. Went back to 35; downloaded half a 6MB file then quit. Hmmm... 4) AOL Checkup gave me 4 errors: ~ Need defrag (strange. Diskeeper did a scheduled defrag 2 hours prior. I ignored that one) ~ Spyware not detected (also strange. Spyware Dr. boots at startup and monitors in the background, and I get occasional notifications from it while browsing, which shows it is indeed working) ~ Cache not optimized (cool. I did the repair) ~ Popup blocker not enabled (didn't realize that, although I should've. Performed repair) ... no change in att. download issues after that. 6) Nothing unusual there. I periodically backup my email to a folder in My Documents. 7) I checked out that software. It seems to be much like 2 apps I already have - Advanced System Optimizer, and System Mechanic. I ran System Mechanic, and it repaired a handful of registry issues. Rebooted computer, and... now all my email downloads fine! 6 in a row! so, after 2 weeks of fiddling, this seemed to work. (Note: I also reset the online art storage setting to 45 somewhere in there, if that matters.) Guess it must've been a corrupt registry entry in there somewhere - glad it's taken care of now. Thanks a bunch!

OK Wut?????
OK....luv how pro active U R....but not clear on wut got fixed or how....will try to figa this out.
But...if my floundering may have accidentally included a coponent leading to the fixing....Jilly way happy. One of the many thngs i luv about AOL software....is the inclusion of the Quick Fixes....though as always, we have 2 B discerning and get wut they R. AWC utiltity diff from all others....explore each component, expand each and U will C....forget they invented an engine faster than anything out there. And....remember 2.....every few days, manually empty the AOL art cache thingy.....log off, log on and bring it back up to 60. I am totally happy 4 U!!!!!!!!!!! Jilly |

OK, wait....;personal storage really should be set at 60---not lkower---....then emptied (35) and set back up....at regular intervals....you don't want stuff getting Squashed/jammed up in there, right? (Visualize...I find it helps; gremlins taught me this, oK?)
Re AWC....also amazing anti-spy....again, diff from other utilities....starting with engine. Uuuuuuuuuuuuu r good to Go!!!! Good job!!! Excellent!!!! J. PS U have impressive puppy, OMG! Did U build it? Is your chip hyperthreaded? Last edited by Ariesjill; 11-18-2006 at 04:38 PM. |
