The only flaws I have found in using firefox are:
1. Many anti-spyware guard programs are not programmed for firefox (spyware blaster is) 2. you can't go to some web pages because they require IE. Other than that Firefox is the best browser I have ever used. I hate how slow IE is and how easy it is for spyware to install through IE if you're not using an anti-spyware that has "active protection"

It's a little buggy (still in Beta) but the author is continually working on it and anyway, it's far preferable to opening IE! |

hm... it tells me software installation is disabled. How do I get it to install. (never had this problem before) the site is in the "allowed" category to install things. I tried to uninstall mozilla then re-installed it, but it is still doing it.

I don't use the sp2 firewall. the exact message is:
"Software installation is currently disabled. Click Edit Options...to enable it and try again." only there is no "enable" or "disable". it does have a box that says "warn me when websites try to install extensions or themes." that site is in the allowed exceptions. whether the box with the "warn me when..." is checked or not it does it. I have never had this problem with sp2 or older versions of firefox.

The 'Warn me when websites......' in the Content tab of the Options menu is a safeguard against silent or stealthy installations. When you install from a website FF doesn't recognise, under the toolbars you get a line with an option to give permission for the installation. Have you seen that? This line is the result of ticking the 'Warn me when blah blah option!'
Try to install again and keep an eye under the toolbars for the warning, assuming you haven't already seen it. The rest is straightforward, hopefully. |

No i've never seen the line to give permission, and liek I said before it does this whether the box is checked or not. I figured that's what it was for, but it's not letting anything install, even when the box is unchecked.

o, that. yes, but even if I go into edit options, what do I click to make the thing install? I already gave that site permission to install stuff (as I said before) and I have tried unlicking that box (ware me when...) and it still won't install.

When that bar appears, click the 'Edit Options' button and you click either 'allow' website to install or 'add' to safe list, you'll work it out. (It's a while since I used it.) If you click allow, when you close the options dialogue box, the bar then disappears and you have to start the installation process afresh.

I finally figured out why firefox was doing that after it happened again on Linux. I had software instllation disabled on version 1.0.x and then upgraded to 1.5. Apparently there is a glitch where it automatically keeps the old rejection setting with no way through firefox itself to set it to accept software installations. You have to go to the about:config and set the xpinstall.enabled preference to true to re-enable installs.
that was annoying! Thought I'd post this incase anyone else had the same problem.
