Lost bookmarks and user profile
This has happened before and I was unable to fix the problem- so I started all over. For some reason, I tried to navigate firefox and was presented with a window that said default user, new create new user, or existing user- something like that. Not sure how this happened. When I went to default user- nothing happened, When I went to my name, I could open firefox but all my bookmarks were gone and it was like I was a new user. It took me months to re-create the bookmarks from the last time this happened. Now again and I don't know how to get back to my previous profile with my bookmarks.
Last time, someone suggested a fix which didn't get me anywhere. Can somebody help me to try again. Thanks |

Open your Task Manager(Ctrl+Alt+Delete or right click on Taskbar ->
Task Manager) and left click on firefox.exe to highlight, and End Process. Then try again. To start the Profile Manager: Close Firefox completely, Start-> Run-> type firefox -p Firefox Help: How To Manage Profiles http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/profile Sounds like you're using an older vs of Firefox. Go to Help/About Mozilla Firefox to see which vs you have. The latest vs is 1.5.0.1. If you've still got vs1.0.7 or earlier then delete everything to do with FF. You should start with a fresh/new Profile. Save your bookmarks though/Bookmarks>Manage Bookmarks>Export to a location you can find easily then uninstall through Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. thanks- will update but are bookmarks lost forever?
You're right-my Firefox Version is old: 1.0.7 I will update. I tried the process you outlined before- going to start-run but I didnt' see what the person was referring to re: profiles. Maybe I will update and start over. My bookmarks are gone so I have to start over- again! Very discouraging. I didn't know you could export bookmarks so I will do that in the future. Do you think my others are lost or can I get back to the other profile- Can it be found?
thanks |

MozBackup is a simple utility for creating backups of Firefox, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, Mozilla Suite and Netscape profiles. It allows you to backup and restore bookmarks, mail, contacts, history, extensions, cache etc.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder You can search for your bookmarks, might be able to find them. Start>Search>bookmarks.html>Search. Make sure you click on->More advanced options →" and select "Search hidden files and folders". For Windows 2000 and XP users If you cannot find your profile folder:: In Windows 2000 and XP, the default profile locations are under "Application Data", which is a hidden folder. In Explorer (i.e. double-click My Computer) click: Tools → Folder Options → View (tab) → Show Hidden files and folders. To do a Windows Search: To search default profile locations under the "Application Data" folder, you will need to enable searching hidden files and folders. Click: "Start → Search → More advanced options →" and select "Search hidden files and folders". For those curious, the "%APPDATA%" phrase for Windows 2000/XP is an environment variable that automatically updates for login username changes. "Start -> Run -> %APPDATA%" will quickly open the Application Data folder. How to Show System Files 2000/XP, Bookmarks are located here. One of the new features in Firefox 1.5 is a 5 day automatic backup of your bookmarks.html file. Each backup copy is stored in the \bookmarkbackups folder in your profile. Open Firefox and go to Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks. In the Manager window go to File > Import.
