firefox password

Hi, Does anyone know of a way to password protect Mozilla Firefox so each time someone clicks on the icon it will ask you for a username/password?
I have a daughter who needs sometimes to use the computer but has a bad habit of going places she shouldn,t.Would sooner keep her off the browser.

The proper thing to do would be to set up the daughters own username and optionally a password. So long as you logout when you're not using the computer, she can/will login under her own name and privlages.

Thanks for the reply,i know that would seem to be the obvous thing to do.
My daughter has her own computer that has been reformatted twice ,she continually goes and gets bugs when ever she is on line.
We don,t want her to think that she has rights to my wifes new computer by giving her a user name ,just want to block access to the browser.I am guessing by your reply that there is no easy way to password protect firefox.
My daughter is 15 therefore she knows everything about everything as i,m sure many of you have experienced the true bliss of teenagers can imagine.

No, you can't password protect a browser. You can however password your screensaver. Therefore the desktop. It sounds asthough you really want to setup a firewall to block certain elements of risk to the system. That could be done across the board, and should probably be done from the administrator account so regular users don't have authority to circumvent the safeguards. Then the daughter, or any of you for that matter will get the "the page cannot be displayed" message when an attempt is made to access a forbidden site.

Did you try setting the Master Password? This disallows anyone from using any of the functions, I think! (It's been a while since I tested it!)

Tools > Options > Privacy > Passwords > Set Master Password.

So what, she does'nt have access to firefox. Big whoop. There is a built in feature that some people know about AKA Internet explorer. IE has much less features and no feature for password protection. The only way to prevent this is to uninstall IE through the add/remove Windows Componants which is located in the add/remove programs option in control panel. But then you can't download windows updates or run internet trojan scaners.

Looks like more reason to lock the desktop with the screensaver/password. If you want to disable internet access, and have dialup, you could set the connection to time out when idle, and make the connection manager prompt for the ISP password. But that's only for ISP's that aren't an "always on" type connection.

Typing 'password protect internet access' into a search engine brings up some utilities that block Internet access. I've no experience of any of but this method could perhaps be looked into. Here's one that comes near the top of the Google list:

http://www.toplang.com/internetlock.htm

For keeping someone out of the computer full-stop, the suggestion of password protecting the screensaver sounds good.

Pin hosts file

If she's just visiting a limited number of certain forbidden sites you can add the URL of each site to your hosts file and assign it the URL 127.0.0.1. The hosts file is located in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc. When asked which program to use to open the file, select "Notepad". After some generic info you'll find the first entry which is:

127.0.0.1 localhost

If you wanted to prevent her from accessing http://******sex.com for example you would add this line under the one I listed above:

127.0.0.1 ******sex.com

Then save the file. If you inadvertenly used "save as" rather than "save" you'd have to change the file type from "txt" to "all files".

You can also go to download.com and do a search for "Spybot" which will remove spyware from your system, immunize against future infection, and allow you to have the program add tons of entries of known-bad sites to your hosts file. It's freeware so no worries there either.

If you want more control then that your can try one of the "Net Nanny" type programs that are available and/or a program like Iopus STARR which will secretly monitor every website she visits and every chat she has and it will also give you her passwords. You can get a shareware copy here:

http://www.sharewareorder.com/iOpus-...nload-1194.htm

Many ways to skin this cat and these are the 1st that came to mind but they should help if not solve the problem. If she knows enough or knows how to use google she can figure out how to edit the hosts file (although Spybot can block the ability to monitor it after you have it set as you wish). The battle is joined!
