[SOLVED] Server not found error in Firefox for one site

I have an errant setting which I don't know how to fix.

One site-- my public library -- gives a repeated server not found error for the
url www.mylibrary.org.

On my other home network machine running Win2k and Firefox, the site loads.

How do I unblock one url which won't load? This is a recent problem and likely is some key I hit incorrectly and now have an error I cannot trace in Firefox or XP.

Also, other url sites such as library catalog and user account which I have bookmarked load fine.

Re: Server not found error in Firefox for one site

Try clearing your browser's cache, click tools>clear recent history>click on the drop down menu>select everything finally clear now then try the site again.

I just tried the site myself and was redirected to this page here http://hus.parkingspa.com/hc3.asp and I was not able to ping the site either so it seems like a weird site to me.

What were you trying to do there?

Re: Server not found error in Firefox for one site

Ha!.

I just said mylibrary as an example!

too funny.

The actual site is www.apl.org

I will try clearing cache-- something I was afraid to do for losing my settings.
Can you say a bit more about what clearing cache does with exact instructions?

Re: Server not found error in Firefox for one site

I did that, though the format is slightly different in the current version.

No change. This must have to do with a setting for this url only and I have no special settings on it-- no exceptions, no anything. I don't know if my most recent backup has the error, but I want to save the stuff I've accumulated.

Re: Server not found error in Firefox for one site

Ok.

message reads successfully flushed.

Then I retried the apl org. It gave the same error. I did not reboot the machine.

And it's all going on on just this machine-- on a two computer homenet. Unbelievable, no?

Re: Server not found error in Firefox for one site

Check the host file and see if the web sites have been hijacked. If you have a router then check the setup. You want to check the firewall also.Phone your ISP and see if they have filtered them out for some reason.

Re: Server not found error in Firefox for one site

np another thing I would like for you to try is simply try and access the site using Internet Explorer and if it loads fine then you should check Firefox blocked sites I noticed earlier you said no exceptions and I was not sure if you checked in Tools then security and clicked exceptions and made sure one of your blocked sites was not apl.org.

Also if you have any application installed that blocks malicious sites such as spyware blaster make sure that site did not wind up in there by chance.

Let me know if you have checked these things already and I still have something else for you if this issue is not yet resolved.

Re: Server not found error in Firefox for one site

Well it can't be anything off this machine because because the in the next room loads the site.

I took out that long list of exceptions in Firefox security-- all the stuff that said block.

But no apl.org was on there.

Reinstalling the program would drag along anything that is set in chrome or
about:config etc.

I could delete all antivirus programs-- four are installed on here to check downloads.

Just now I have shut down what was in the tray: AVG and one whose icon I forgot. Also spybot resident. None of this is doing any good.

Re: Server not found error in Firefox for one site

Tomorrow I am going to hook up my backup disk. if the backup isn't too old and the problem is solved I don't mind taking the easy way.

I have done a few things I will miss not having though. In that case I should be able to retrieve those items before wiping the disk.

Please verify if you have four anti virus programs currently on your PC as more than one is not recommended.

Re: Server not found error in Firefox for one site

Programs other than AVG 8 are closed and not active in the try.

I am not subject to virus problems on a day to day basis.

The other installed but not running progs (to do scans if I see a problem) are

A-Squared
Malware bytes
Superantispyware
and HJT (Highjack this)

Most of that stuff came from one recommendation but I rarely use those things.

I have not gone to the backup disk yet.

Re: Server not found error in Firefox for one site

Why is it necessary to use Internet Explorer with anything? I never use it and would have it off the machine if I could delete it.

However, I just tried it and it balked and gave a page not found error with an instruction to go to tools and check automatic LAN detection. I dutifully did that but no change to IE.

Re: Server not found error in Firefox for one site

Can you load the site via a proxy? I saw something similar while googling and the person said they used a proxy and the site loaded. Not a fix, but it may (or may not, I'm not really a great technical guy) help narrow down the problem.

Re: Server not found error in Firefox for one site

Well, *if* a proxy would work for that one site, it would still be a patch so far as I'm concerned. Not something I'd want to have to fix time and again on a new install or software upgrade. Besides, are we talking about IE here or Firefox?
