[SOLVED] FF Won't Remember Passwords; Emails Open in IE

Hello I have two issues. These issues occurred after I had to clean my PC from malware (with tetonbob, these forums). During the cleaning process many files were found to be corrupt and the system automatically fixed/deleted them. As a result I had to install a new version of Outlook, and moved from using Outlook 2000 to Outlook 2007.

Issue 1:
I use FF as my primary browser. It will not remember my passwords. during the malware session we went through the process outlined below and nothing changed. Note: IE passwords are not being remembered either.

Issue 2:
Now that I installed a Outlook 2007 clicking on a link in an email opens IE. I tried this process that I found online:

1. Launch My Computer or Windows Explorer.
2. Choose menu 'Tools' -> 'Folder Options'
3. Click the 'File Types' tab.
4. Scroll down to find 'URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol' (under the File Types column) and make sure it's highlighted.
5. Click the 'Advanced' button.
6. In the 'Actions' box make sure that 'open' is highlighted (click on it if necessary)
7. Click the 'Edit' button.
8. Uncheck 'Use DDE', click the Browse button and browse to Firefox.exe on your system, and click OK. [Updated for clarification, sorry about the earlier omission.] If you get a "file not found" message, browse to Firefox.exe and click OK.
9. The path to Firefox.exe should now appear in the 'Application used to perform this action' box.
10. Go to that 'Application used to perform this action' box, and add '-url "%1"' at the end, without the single quotes, so that it reads e.g. (on my computer at least) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -url "%1" - with the double quotes!
10. Click OK again.
11. Repeat the process with the file type 'URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy'

It waould not let me do step 10, and I didn't see the file type in #11 there. So, right now it says open with firefox.exe but it doesn't.

Procedure for trying to fix FF password problem:

Check this out.(note, always backup the registry before making any changes!)

see this key in the registry...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoComplete

Check the following values in the right hand pane, both values should be yes

Append Completion
AutoSuggest

And this key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

Check the following values in the right hand pane, all three values should be yes

FormSuggest Passwords
FormSuggest PW Ask
Use FormSuggest

One more thing to try for IE7

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=885180

Mozilla/Firefox

Please note, I am by no means a Firefox expert, but I do use it. I'd suggest checking with the above forum if you have any doubts about the below suggestions I've culled from reading on the 'net.

One thing you can check is type about:config into the Firefox address bar and then type signon into the Filter space, check that the value signon.autofillForms is set to true. If it is not, double click it to change it to true. Also check signon.rememberSignons and do the same.

I've seen it suggested that one way to fix this in Firefox is to backup bookmarks, delete profile, create new profile, and import bookmarks.

Another suggestion is to back up the profile data, uninstall and reinstall Firefox.

[SOLVED] Firefox is not remembering passwords?

It's also been suggested that deleting the signons*.txt files in your Firefox profile folder will remove all current passwords and a "never save" setting, which allow a save going forward.

More info here

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Password_M...roubleshooting

------------------------------

Any assistance you can provide on these two issues would be appreciated.

Re: FF Won't Remember Passwords; Emails Open in IE

I'll see if I can review your problem a little more thoroughly later today (heading to work now), but I would like some information.
  1. Open a new tab, type about:config into the URL bar then press return.
  2. Agree to be careful when Firefox asks (you won't change anything, so this will be safe).
  3. In the filter bar, type password.
  4. Four items should show up. Right-click on security.password_lifetime and select copy when the contextual menu shows up.
  5. Paste that in a new reply to this thread.

I highly recommend NOT changing anything if you are unsure of what you are doing. Simply looking at the config and copying items will be fine, but you need to be very careful when modifying the configuration.

Hi jhedding.

It seems you've done a lot of research on your problems (which is nice to see) and have performed various procedures in an endeavour to reconcile them. You make references to advice sought and given but I'm getting confused as to your exact current state of affairs. So,what, in a nutshell are your 2 remaining problems?

Have you still got the password issue?

You mentioned IE opening for email links?

Re: FF Won't Remember Passwords; Emails Open in IE

Hello shuuhen,

Thanks for your reply.

I see five items not four. The first one is in bold type:
pref.privacy.disable_button.view_passwords_exceptions;false

Here is the one you asked for:
security.password_lifetime;30

I am totally unsure of what I am doing, and I will touch nothing until you tell me to do so!

To keithy397: All the items I mentioned were provided to me by tetonbob while addressing and fixing my virus/malware issues. Those are resolved but he couldn't help with the remaining two issues. I was simply noting what I had tried so far, but the two issues still remain, those being that (1) neither FF nor IE will remember my passwords, and (2) my emails open nin IE and I want them to open in FF.

Additional information discovered Monday that might help - I do not see URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol in my file types.

Stick with shuuhen's guidance jheeding, he's very experienced. I'll just make an observation or two if that's ok, my 2 cents worth!

If both browsers are experiencing this problem, I would guess it's more of a system or security setting rather than a local Firefox one. In Firefox you can check you're not clearing them every time you exit by checking - Tools > Options > Privacy - If you have ticked the box 'Clear history when Firefox closes', select the Settings button and check you are not clearing your passwords, or any other data you don't want to.

Useful info on Firefox passwords from the Mozilla Knowledge Base here and here.

You should be able to change this by changing your default email program setting. However, Firefox isn't an email client but you can set a default mailto:setting to a webmail account.

Check in your system File Types for the default prog. Look in your Control Panel for the Folder Options icon. Open it and select File Types then scroll down to HTML. I have mine set to open with Firefox but you can select here (or change) what you want. Once this is set, browsers will use this setting as default.

Yes, I assume that, too, which is why I added that information. In IE sometimes it remembers my passqword (like for this forum) but not other times. In FF it never remembeers my password.

Where do I check on that?

Both my HTM and HTML extensions are set to open with Firefox.

Thanks for your input.

Re: FF Won't Remember Passwords; Emails Open in IE

@jhedding
I just want to give you some info before I hit the sheets (2am) mainly because I discovered earlier today that in Firefox 3.* you can now select mail programs in Firefox and/or change your mailto settings. I'm getting slow with age perhaps!

Tools > Options > Applications > Scroll down to the 'mailto' content and adjacent to it you'll see a drop down menu where you can pick (or add if not there) your preferred email program.

Good news eh?

I'll check back tomorrow (later) to see how you're getting on with the other prob's.

Nos da.

Re: FF Won't Remember Passwords; Emails Open in IE

That would be good news, except that I'm not trying to change which email program I use to send an email. I'm trying to have links in incoming emails open in a particular browser (FF).

Have a good night's sleep!

Re: FF Won't Remember Passwords; Emails Open in IE

I'm hoping you come back soon!

Just some more info for you. When I look in FF, all my signons and passwords are listed. I do not have a master. I added one, used it, and nothing changed so I deleted it.

I do not appear to have any signons*.txt files or a key3.db file.

I am running FF 3.0.12. I don't want to upgrade to 3.5 until I have to, because it made by PC crash about 10 times every day and there are some items I use that are not supported.

Re: FF Won't Remember Passwords; Emails Open in IE

I don't know exactly why, but the issue of links in Outlook opening in IE has been resolved. They are now opening in FF.

I re-installed FF3.0.12. Maybe that did it.

Password problem remains. Although my passwords are listed in FF, they are not remembered.

Re: FF Won't Remember Passwords; Emails Open in IE

I had no problems with passwords in FF.3.0 but did with 3.5..
There were some bugs in 3.5.0 but they are supposed to be fixed in 3.5.1, that is why they released it so soon after 3.5.0

Do you run anything like CCleaner that might clear out cookies? Have you tried clearing your cache (doubt this would make a difference)? Do you have other user accounts on your computer that you could test with?

Thanks.

Yes, I cleared my cache.
Yes, I used CCleaner.
No, I don't have any other user accounts.

Passwords are still not being remembered. Any other ideas?

Re: FF Won't Remember Passwords; Emails Open in IE

What do you use for anti-spyware software? I think that or another program that would clear cookies may be removing some of the good cookies.

If you type in a login name manually for any site that should autologin, does Firefox put in a password? I've seen stuff like this happen from strange cookie setups (allow/allow for session/deny). You could also try going into Firefox preferences, then the Privacy tab and going to Show Cookies and seeing what's there. If you don't care what happens to your current cookies, you could clear them.

You could also try Opera, but I expect whatever is causing problems with the other browsers will cause problems for Opera too.

I use McAfee and I have Malwarebytes.

Sometimes it does. Sometimes the password is there and I have to enter the ID! I have several cookies set to allow in FF preferences, but it doesn't make a difference, it is not keeping them. I have already cleared my cookies several times in an effort to have FF create what I believe are missing but required files (possibly as a result of those files being corrupted) but that does not help.

Can we get specific? We don't seem to be getting anywhere here, so maybe if we work on a specific issue I can figure out the rest.

Before my corrupted files problem, I had a cookie for my.yahoo.com. Now I have to enter an ID and password every time I start a new FF session, notwithstanding the fact that I check the box that says remember me for two weeks.

I have my.yahoo.com listed as a cookie to allow.

Same issue with my Facebook page. I have the cookie allowed, but I have to login and password every single session.

Quote:

Ha! I don't believe that the solution to my problem is to use another browser!

I tend to agree that something on my computer is either blocking the cookie, or I am missing some files that are necessary for the cookies to be stored, since I have the same problem in IE.

If you don't think you can troubleshoot this with me further, can you recommend which forum can?

Thanks.
