How to automatically save files with FF

I download a lot of .zip & .rar files with FF v2.0.0.20. In the past I setup FF to automatically save the files to the 'My Documents' directory. When I clicked on a .zip/.rar the downloads window would pop up and I would see the status bar showing the file being downloaded.

I recently formatted and reinstalled Windows XP Pro and quickly setup FF v2.0.0.20. Now when I go to download a .zip/.rar I always get a confirmation box to either open the file or save it to disk. The option to check the box to 'Do this automatically for files like this from now on.' is not available. Why? What do I have to do to have FF download files like it used to.

The only addon that I have ever used for FF is Tabbrowser Preferences. I don't recall having to do anything special in the past.

Thanks.

Re: How to automatically save files with FF

The setting in your screenshot is incorrect for what you want to do. You're telling Firefox to open the file with a particular program.

Change the setting to 'Save to disk'.

Open Options and in the 'Main' tab select 'Save files to' and insert the path to the folder you want to download to.

Or, you could select the 'Always ask me where to save files' option and then you'll be able to select the download folder each time.

Thank you for the reply. The main problem is that I don't even want this particular confirmation dialog to pop up. I have already set my 'Save to' options. If I select the 'Save to disk' setting FF doesn't remember that setting and asks me every time I try to download a file. I only posted the picture to illustrate that the 'Do this automatically for files like this from now on' check box can not be checked.

Prior to this last format and reinstall of Windows XP Pro I never got this dialog box when saving files with FF. I was not running any special addons or scripts. I would just click on the file I wanted to download and the FF download window would pop up showing me the percent status of the download.

Thanks.

You wont be able to select that option until you select Save to disk first. It is grayed out in your pic because it is not selected.

Apart from setting the option to always save files to your default location in the Firefox options, you also get that option in the Download Manager.

Re: How to automatically save files with FF

It is always grayed out. I have used both of the save options (open with and save to disk) and the 'Do this automatically for files like this now on' check box is never available.

Re: How to automatically save files with FF

Are you still running Firefox 2? If yes, is there any reason in particular for that?

That aside, you said you did a quick install of FF version 2. Try a clean re-install. Uninstall FF2 first then reinstall.

The info I'm trying to give you here may not be valid because of the difference in versions - I'm relating to Firefox 3.*

Re: How to automatically save files with FF

As mentioned in my original post I am running FF 2.0. I am running 2.0 for the tabbrowser preferences that are not available in the 3.x version. When I get time I will try to uninstall and reinstall FF.

Thanks.
