Firefox, Itunes, Quicktime and downloads

I have all the above installed on windows vista. Until I got an ipod and had to install itunes and quicktime everything was fine.
I often download mp4 podcasts from a site. Before itunes, quicktime and the ipod I had the option to save the file to a location on my computer for future viewing which I did. Now that I have quicktime, which is required for itunes and the ipod, I don't get the option to save the mp4 file. It automatically downloads to quicktime and opens the file. I cannot save the file for future viewing. Of course I could "pay" for the "pro" version of quicktime and save the file but I don't want to do this.
I tried uninstalling quicktime but itunes won't work without quicktime.
Is there a work around to save the mp4 files like before quicktime?
Thanks for any help.

Re: Firefox, Itunes, Quicktime and downloads

Go to Tools > Options > Content tab > File Types and click the Manage button. Click the Extension column header to re-order the list alphabetically, then scroll down to MP4 (or just use the search box and type MP4), highlight the entry and click the Change Action button. It's probably set to 'Use this plugin: QT'. Change it to 'Save them on my computer' and click OK to complete.

This is for Firefox 2, so it might be slightly different if you're using the newer version.

Re: Firefox, Itunes, Quicktime and downloads

Thanks Koala, I'm using Firefox 3 and it is slightly different. Mine is listed under tools>options>applications. The problem is that mp4 isn't listed. I've tried changing anything remotely resembling a podcast to "save" but it still opens with quicktime.

I don't know if you can add new filetypes in Firefox 3. FF2 only allows you to edit existing entries. Hang on for some more replies from FF3 users.

Re: Firefox, Itunes, Quicktime and downloads

I don't see anyway to add new file types in Firefox but you can in Seamonkey. Even with the mp4 file type added in Seamonkey and an option to "save" the file it still opens it with quicktime.
