Microsoft Messes up my Firefox

I have FF 3.0.11 and have about 25 bookmarks. It has been working fine. Tonight, I see a little "Yellow exclamation" symbol below on the bottom so I do a Microsoft update. I guess I was installing IE 8.0. But I canceled half way through the download so it never finished.

When I opened up FF, all my bookmarks were gone. They were there 5 minutes ago. I can't go back and do a restore so I just did a fresh Uninstall/Install then it showed up again.

I'm pretty PO'ed that I spent 15 minutes redoing the process again because of this update.

Is this a common occurrence?

You sure it was a MS update blackbeagle? I've never seen that description (Yellow Exclamation) of an MS auto update before.

It could have been an update for Firefox and by cancelling it before finishing you could have corrupted something.

Put the 15 minutes down to the learning curve and now you got the bookmarks back, don't fix what ain't broken!!

Re: Microsoft Messes up my Firefox

It WAS a MS update because it was in the process of installing IE8. I didn't want that done yet so I canceled it.

OK. Fact is, your bookmarks file is tucked away in your profile folder. Most installations take place in your Program Files folder so I can't see what may have caused the temporary disappearance of your bookmarks. I would imagine the only possible cause would be that the file couldn't be accessed because it was in use at the time, with what? No idea!

You might want to run Crap Cleaner - or whatever utility you may have (ie Glary or Sys Mech) - to clean up the Registry and remove any files the partial installation may have left behind.
