Firefox won't start

About a week or so ago Mozilla would not start at all but Internet explorer would. I deleted Mozilla and downloaded and ran the latest version. still the same problem. from the Mozilla FAQ site I tried a few things such as turning off my firewall and anti spyware and anti virus in case they caused the problem. No luck at all. If however I look in task manager it says that firefox is running,but I can't see it. initially Internet explorer works but I couldn't access the web from an email with a hyperlink,it failed to work ,though hyperlinks in the explorer window did work. Now Internet explorer won't work either. I downloaded and installed ie 8 but all that happens is a flash on the screen and a message telling me that IE had a problem and needs to close.
I am totally baffled by all this and as a consequence can only access the internet from work
Apologies if this is in the wrong forum but I selected this one as Firefox was the first to show a problem

You might need to delete your Firefox profile folder to get it to work. In Vista, it's located here: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla.
