Flash problem in Firefox

Just recently, any page I view in Firefox that has flash on it will seriously lag to the point where it takes a couple minutes just to scroll to the bottom of a page and my CPU usage will drop to almost nothing. I have the latest version of each program and I don't think it's a problem with Flash player since it runs smoothly in IE. I reinstalled both programs and even with a brand new FF with no plugins/extensions ,it didn't help. I've been running NoScript to kill all the flash and it's running good but does anyone know anything about how to fix this? Also my other XP account doesn't have this problem but has all the same FF settings. Might it be something in the registry?

Re: Flash problem in Firefox

It may be a problem in the profile.

Have you tried running Firefox in safe mode (Firefox safe mode, that is, not Windows safe mode)?

Hey, thanks for the reply. Neither creating a new profile or running Firefox in safe mode fixes the problem. It seems the only way to negate this problem is to use IE or using a different XP account.

Re: Flash problem in Firefox

If it works OK in another Windows Account, there are obviously some issues with your main account settings. There are two things you could try.

If you have a suitable System Restore point (i.e you have not installed other software since the problem first became evident), you could try that.

The other approach would be a complete uninstall of Firefox (all remaining files and folders deleted, Registry Keys removed, Profile deleted or moved), then uininstall Flash (Adobe have a an uninstaller which I find is often needed with Flash installations). Reboot, then install Firefox then the latest version of Flash (always the latest, for security reasons).

If that seems a bit brutal, you could try uninstalling then re-installing Flash on its own as a halfway house. But I'd still reboot between the uninstall and the reinstall, even if the uninstaller does not require it.

Hope this helps.

System Restore was the first thing I tried when the problem started and that didn't help. Now I just uninstalled Firefox and Adobe Flash, deleted all it's folders and registry keys, rebooted, reinstalled both, rebooted again. Firefox was working fine up until I reinstalled Adobe Flash. I'm thinking this is being caused by something other than Firefox or Flash.

I'm inclined to agree with you. But Flash is known to misbehave on some systems.

If it's all getting to be too much of a hassle, you could use the FlashBlock add-on in Firefox, which prevents all Flash files from running except those you explicitly start. As we don't actually want 90% of the Flash movies that get downloaded, this is not a bad idea in any case.
