firefox opening new instances with ads

Hi -
Today, while browsing thru ebay or any other site, my firefox browser suddenly started launching new instances (not a new tab, but a new instance of firefox) in order to display some sort of full page ad. I'm running Firefox 3.0.5, my anti-virus is up to date and runs regularly, and I ran the free version of ad-aware this morning, but am still getting this behavior them. Has anyone else seen this? And does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it? Thank you.

couple of add ons that will stop this are:

NoScript
AdBlock Plus
