[SOLVED] please assist me to unplug firefox

When I got a new computer recently it had preinstalled mozilla firefox. Now whenever I try to access anything from my outlook account firefox opens.

I can bypass it for the most part doing most computing but in our email accounts it seems to be the one to open everything.

How can I get the email accounts to open and the attachments via internet explorer and not firefox?

I hope I have explained the situation fully enough for assiatance.
Thanks

Re: please assist me to unplug firefox

Open Firefox and go to Tools > Options > Main tab. Remove the checkmark from 'Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup'.

Then close Firefox and go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Click the Set Program Access & Defaults button on the left, click Custom and set the default browser to IE and the default email to Outlook.

I opened firefox and went to tools, options, then main

I was then presented with main, tabs, content, applications, privacy, security and advanced.
I do not see this sentence as presented anywhere in the main box***Remove the checkmark from 'Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup'***

I have when firefox starts show a home or blank page.
Belwo that is home page , use current page, use book mark, restore to default.
Below that is downloads and plug ins.

Please tell me where this is?
Then I can try the next part below.
Quote:
Then close Firefox and go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Click the Set Program Access & Defaults button on the left, click Custom and set the default browser to IE and the default email to Outlook.

Sorry, I just realised I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.20 and you're probably using the latest v3 which has a different layout.

Tools > Options > Advanced tab > General > System Defaults.

Re: please assist me to unplug firefox

Thanks for your patience but what your are displaying is not present under tools, options, main tab.
Where you show system defaults my screen is showing,
Add ons
change options for your add ons with a manage add ons button where you are showing the check now button is.

I also tried tools, options, then tabs but that does not show what you have kindly reproduced either. Where could that screen be? Is it possible I have a different version of firefox?

Oops I did not see you had replied to the thread I suppose that answers my questions above.

Before I go ahead and disconnect firefox is this easy to select the internet explorer as the default setting?

How about setting google as the default page as I have now? Will google just show up or is that yet another setting I will have to change when i uncheck the firefox?

I just want to make sure that I don't screw it all up.

So doing what you secribe keeping into consideration I have the other version of firefox nothing else wil be required and it shoudl just work including google as the home page or whatever it is called?

Re: please assist me to unplug firefox

Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs tab to see which programs are set as default. At the bottom of the window is the option for 'Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser'. Put a checkmark in this box.

You can set google as your homepage in both Firefox and IE.

In Firefox, go to Tools > Options > Main tab, enter www.google.com into the Home Page box and set the 'When Firefox starts' option to 'Show my home page'.

And for IE, go to Internet Options > General tab and enter www.google.com into the Address box.

This should release Firefox from being the default browser, and keep it from taking over from IE again in future, and also make google the home page for both browsers.

Re: please assist me to unplug firefox

O.K. I have found the advanced tab on firefox and unchecked the system default.
Then I did as you suggested here
Quote:
Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs tab to see which programs are set as default. At the bottom of the window is the option for 'Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser'. Put a checkmark in this box.
and here
Quote:
And for IE, go to Internet Options > General tab and enter www.google.com into the Address box.
But I did not find this,
Quote:
Then close Firefox and go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Click the Set Program Access & Defaults button on the left, click Custom and set the default browser to IE and the default email to Outlook.
I dont have add or remove programs or set program access and defaults buttons. Although it seems to be working opening up stuff from the outlook.

So maybe it is solved?

What do you think?

Re: please assist me to unplug firefox

It looks like your problem is solved, but post back here if it returns.

The last stage, setting IE and Outlook as defaults, probably isn't necessary if they are already set as defaults. The location I gave for you to look in was for XP, not Vista (sorry, my mistake again).

For Vista, it's Start > Default Programs > 'Set your default programs', select browser on the left, click 'Set this program as default' on the right and click OK.

I have found this area you make mention of but I did not select internet explorer 7 as default because either it is already selected or something else was selected in another area as everything seems to be working now.

Should I anyway? As stated I dont want to screw up anything.

Re: [SOLVED] please assist me to unplug firefox

If everything is now working as you want it to, don't make any more changes. But if the problem returns at a later date, refer back to the instructions in this thread for changing the default settings.
