Firefox running so slowly, also hogging all memory and CPU usage at 50%

My mozilla firefox just yesterday began to act very slowly. Switching between tabs has taken forever and just opening a new page takes a while. The bookmarks tab, and any other tab at the top for that matter, cannot be opened. I click them, then get the outline of the window, but the image behind is shown, like it is frozen. To exit i have to use alt + F4 or the ctrl + alt + del then end process. Once that happens the computer runs as normal. At the windows manager, i also notice that firefox.exe is using 50% of the CPU usage and 170,000 K of memeory. IE on the other hand runs perfectly well, even if firefox is open. How can i fix it? Incase it is malware, I have included a Hijack This! log.

If you are running any firefox addons disable them and see if that helps I had some memory leak going on from a poorly coded addon.

Re: Firefox running so slowly, also hogging all memory and CPU usage at 50%

i'm don't think its an add-on, the last one i downloaded was from firefox 2 at least a year ago. i have updated a few and i did upgrade to version 3 about 3 weeks ago, but how does that explain it suddenly running slow now? Oh another thing, i also recently installed AVG anti-virus and it has a few security components that i know affect both IE and firefox. Does that help?

Avg free has a site checker called link checker if you double click on your avg icon you can disable this feature. just right click on the link check component. I have noticed with firefox 3.0.5 that it is a bit on the slow side. I experience lag as well.

Re: Firefox running so slowly, also hogging all memory and CPU usage at 50%

I have a similar problem, except it's caused neither by a plugin nor a virus, and my CPU usage hits the 90s randomly after ten minutes, especially when I am trying to load a link or scroll. For the record, it started today, and I have a 3.88 gHz Core Duo Processor loaded.

Hi,

Naropolo, you need to take a look at this. Then you need to follow all of the steps and then post a new thread in the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum.

@Bobofthedead, and naropolo, you both should also try running FF in safe mode. That runs FF w/o any addons or extentions, and see if you are getting the same load problems.

As for everyone else, I am very glad to see that you didn't try to help the users with thier HJT log file. It means that either you don't know how to read it or you read the rules, and I will take the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Cheers!
