Mozilla Thunderbird problems

I know this might be the wrong area but I couldn't find the Thunderbird area. Maybe someone can help me.

I downloaded Thunderbird and imported all my emails from Charter.net. So It worked great. I have a lot of saved emails from there.

Recently my computer crashed so I had do to a complete reinstall of XP. Well now when I reinstall Thunderbird, all my saved emails are gone. I even tried to log on to my internet provider (Charter.net) but there is nothing there except all new emails.

My question is how can I get back my old emails? I have a few saved files that I really need.

Thanks.

Re: Mozilla Thunderbird problems

When you did a reinstall, did you format the hard drive?

Format drive = everything deleted
No format = emails may still be there

You don't have to reinstall the whole OS if your computer crashes, just for future reference.

Re: Mozilla Thunderbird problems

Your configuration and mails will have been stored in:
%appdata%\Thunderbird\Profiles\profile-name
This is of course useless if this folder no longer exists

Re: Mozilla Thunderbird problems

I cannot find this folder but I did reformat my C drive so all the info is wiped out. Does this mean all my saved emails are gone or can I retrieve them back some other way?

Re: Mozilla Thunderbird problems

I'm not sure whether or not an undelete program would be able to recover the folder. I suppose it's worth a shot though.

OK...got it. I actually backed up this folder so I still have it. Now what can I do to put it back to my C drive? it's in my external HD now.

Re: Mozilla Thunderbird problems

When I start Thunderbird, it asks me for name/email address (which I put in) but then it asks for Pop Incoming Server and Outgoing server. How do I get that information? I have no idea what those are.

Like I said, I set this up before and ran it for years but recently my PC crashed and I had to reformat and start all over. DO I have to call my internet provider to get this info or can I get it somewhere on my PC?

thx again.

This is the basic procedure you need to follow: http://www.mozilla.org/support/thund...e_from_mozilla
You can migrate all your accounts and emails from your previous profile backup, so you won't need to enter all those details again.

If it doesn't let you migrate, the manual fresh way is lengthier and more complex. It requires you to setup the email account. Your ISP provides this information for it as follows:
Quote:
How do I set up e-mail in Eudora?

Please follow these steps to set up your e-mail:

[ignore] 1. Launch Eudora e-mail.
2. Select Options from the Tools menu.
3. Click the Getting Started icon in the Category field.
4. In the Real Name field, type your name as you would like it to appear in the “From” field of e-mail messages you send.
5. In the return address field, type your full e-mail address (e.g.,mike@example.com).
[/ignore]
6. In the Mail Server (Incoming) field, type: pop.charter.net
7. In the Login Name field, type your account name.
8. In the SMTP Server (Outgoing) field, type: smtp.charter.net
9. Check the checkbox next to Allow Authentication.

10. Click the OK button.
The bolded bits will apply to your Thunderbird setup too. Thats what you would need to enter into Account settings to setup your email account.

Re: Mozilla Thunderbird problems

OK...I got it to work again but unfortunately, I lost all my old emails. There must have been 30-40 of them. Some of them I really need. Now I looked in my External hard drive where I did the backup and I saw these folders inside the App Data folder: Thunderbird, Profiles, and registry.

I did a copy/paste for the Profiles. I restarted but the old emails weren't there. How can I find my old emails? Were they part of the folders that were backed up as part of the Thunderbird folders?

Re: Mozilla Thunderbird problems

It's not as simple as a copy/paste unfortunately you'll need to follow this procedure: http://www.mozilla.org/support/thunderbird/profile#move
