Internet is connected and running, but i cannnot get onto it using explorers

hi

ever since we downloaded the new firefox patch i am unable to gain access to the internet via firefox, internet explorer or msn explorer, yet the internet is connected and is running at its normal speed.

the firefox screen loads but list the potential problems why it cannot find the homepage or any page, such as "are you connected to the internet" or "the server may be busy, please try later" appear every time.

if you have any advice, it would be much appreciated

O/S is XP home

Hi, welcome to TSF

Whenever you install a new program or update an existing one, you usually need to re-allow it in your firewall settings. If you don't, then the firewall sees it as a potentially dangerous program and blocks it from accessing the internet.

What's the version number of the patch you installed? Is it for Firefox 2 or 3?

Is it only your browsers that aren't working? Can you still send and receive emails?

i think it was mozilla 2.something. but it wasnt 3.
this has happened to me previously, on my laptop, which then i unistalled mozilla and also explorer 7 and i was able to connect via the original XP explorer and msn explorer, but it hasnt worked this time. and obviously i am unable to install mozilla again, yet i can update explorer back to 7. i am unable to get onto email's using outlook and also norton security has stopped functioning properly, due to the internet connection.

im not sure what it is, so if you have any ideas, throw them at me! thanks

Check your firewall's permissions for Firefox and any other programs that can't access the internet.

iv turned all the firewalls (windows and norton one) off briefly, yet it made no difference!

7/10/08 The latest security update from Microsoft causes a problem with internet access on W2K and XP systems using Zone Alarm, supposedly Vista is unaffected. Zone Alarm has posted a work around at:

The work around is to update to latest Zone Alarm version, lower the firewall setting to medium or uninstall the security update.
