firefox not responding at all

Help, please! Firefox will not open. I've tried opening it in safe mode and still won't open. The day before this occurred I wasn't able to view the files in my Inbox. Yes, I have a large inbox and I've not compacted for a while.

When the message comes up about sending mozilla a report, within the Error signature the ModName:msvrcrt.dll. The AppVer is: 1.8.20080.42104.

The good news is that I do have backups of my Inbox files. I don't know how to proceed, and of course do not want to lose any of the email.

Thanks in advance for help.

Re: firefox not responding at all

Hi reffoof and welcome.

You say Firefox but I'm assuming you mean Thunderbird?

If Thunderbird, re-install it over your existing installation. None of your data will be lost as it is stored in a different location from the installation folder and if you have backups, even better. Hopefully by doing this you will overwrite the problems you are experiencing.

Re: firefox not responding at all

Keith,
Oops, yes, of course, I meant Thunderbird. Sorry for the confusion.

I followed your instructions and got this message when installing TB:
Error opening file: C;\Programfiles\MozThunderbird\mozMapi32.dll.

I found the mozMapi32.dll file and renamed it to mozMapi32Y.dll (and remembered that I had had the problem in the past, as I had another file in there named mozMapi32X.dll). In past installations that had solved the problem, but this time: After renaming the mozMapi32.dll file, the installation continued as it should, but when the program ran, I got the same error message/send report to Mozilla message that I had received initially which prompted me to write to the forum, which referenced the ModName:msvrcrt.dll.

Any thoughts about what to do next?

Many thanks!

Re: firefox not responding at all

I composed a completely different message to this suggesting a clean install when I remembered seeing this problem somewhere before. A quick search and I found I'd bookmarked this from the Moz Knowledge Base.

Hopefully that'll help you out reffoof.

Re: firefox not responding at all

Keith,
Thanks for your continued support. I so appreciate this. I do have a logitech camweb and did exit it, and unfortunately, the same error appeared. Yikes!

I'm guessing the next step is full uninstall. My worry, of course, is that I'll lose my data, but I'm confident that you've considered that....

what next?

Re: firefox not responding at all

Before we go for the clean install, did you try disabling the Logitech Webcam in the Task Manager (processes) then open TB? Exiting the Webcam program may not end its link to that file until you end the process or restart your PC.

Otherwise try restarting your PC, but beforehand remove the Webcam from your Startup list. Hopefully that's all it will take.

Re: firefox not responding at all

Keith,
I've uninstalled LogTech Webcam and reinstall TB and restarted computer and still TB isn't opening. Same error message.

I think it is time to uninstall TB without losing data. How do you suggest I proceed?

Many thanks for your help.

Re: firefox not responding at all

I've had a ferret about trying to find successful solutions to the problem you are experiencing, namely the use of the mozmapi32.dll file which is obviously shared between Logitech and Thunderbird and because of this TB cannot successfully update.

The majority of successful solutions I found were achieved by disabling or uninstalling the Logitech software and renaming the mozmapi32.dll file as you mentioned earlier and moving/deleting it (someone actually renamed it and moved it to a temp folder which resolved his problem). A few people were happy to disable and re-enable the Logitech Webcam software when TB updates were available.

So, if none of the above works for you and you've been working on some of the TB Program Files a clean install will do no harm but, you will certainly need to delete and/or move the mozmapi32.dll file after uninstalling Thunderbird or the problem (it seems to me) will continue.

OK, a clean install. Download Thunderbird (don't install yet). Now uninstall Thunderbird from your PC. Find the Program Folder usually located at - C:\Program Files\Thunderbird - and manually delete anything left after the uninstall. If the Thunderbird folder has gone, no worries, TB will create another on installation.

At this point, running a Registry cleaner like Crap Cleaner would clear up unused files and registry entries relating to the previous installation of TB. After cleaning, check whether mozmapi32.dll is still on your PC and if so, deal with it accordingly. Crap cleaner should have picked up on it if both TB and Webcam software has been removed and nothing else shares that file. Now re-install Thunderbird from the file you d/l earlier and you should be good to go.

Your saved data will not be affected as it is saved in a different folder a long 'way' from the Program folder. It is usually located - C:\Documents and Settings\*User Name*\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\*Profile Name*

If you are unsure about anything I've said, post back here before going ahead and we'll work through any issues you may have.

Good luck reffoof!

Re: firefox not responding at all

Keith,
First, thanks for your continued efforts here.

I was in the process of Interesting, I just clicked on an email address on some form, and TB miraculously opened. However, the Inbox was blank and inaccessible.
I then immediately started compacting whatever folders I could. I closed TB and was able to reopen.

Then, following directions from kb.mozillazine.org?Inbox_stays_blank I renamed the Inbox file to "InboxOld." and delted the file "inbox.msf." When I finished that, I was able to reopen TB without problems and see the Inbox. (I may have lost a couple of weeks of fairly recent emails, but in the scheme of things, that's okay.)

I then took your advice about Crap Cleaner, and things are running smoothly. Whew! What a mess. I think I'll remember to compact my folders more often.

Again, Keith, thanks for your generous support.
