Firefox, Quicktime, embedded midi

I have Quicktime installed, but I can't play embedded midi files with Firefox--it prompts me to install the Quicktime plugin. I can play Quicktime movies fine. Haven't tried any other files.

npqtplugin.dll through npqtplugin7.dll are installed and enabled.

Firefox 2.0.0.12
QT 7.45
Windoze XP SP2

Any ideas?

Thanks,
James

Re: Firefox, Quicktime, embedded midi

Hi James,

Did you check the association with midi files and Quicktime in - Tools > Options > Applications?

Re: Firefox, Quicktime, embedded midi

Sheesh, I am sorry I didn't respond sooner. Life happened.

I checked tools > options > content > file types, and there is no .MID file extension listed. I can't see how to add one.

I have a "missing plugin" bar whenever I go to a page with midi on it, which takes me to the quicktime page for a manual install, but of course quicktime is already installed and the plugins are working for everything else.

Still using same version of QT, but upgraded to Firefox 2.0.0.14, which didn't fix the problem unfortunately.

Diolch yn fawr.

Re: Firefox, Quicktime, embedded midi

Hi James,

Sorry about the Tools > Options > Applications bum steer, that's the Firefox 3 set up.

Go to your Control Panel and open 'Folder Options' and then select the 'File Types' tab. Check in the list of registered files that .mid(i) is there and associated with QT. If it isn't there you can add it with the 'New' option. If it is there but not assoc to QT you can change it with the 'Change' option - talk about stating the obvious!!

Hopefully that's all it is................

Re: Firefox, Quicktime, embedded midi

I enabled Midi under file associations in Quicktime, so now FF opens the player externally when I play embedded midi.

But still no plugin. Still get the missing plugin bar, etc.

Now, under tools > options > content > filetypes, there IS a listing for .MID files, but they are opened with quicktime.mid (i.e. externally)

Here's the quicktime plugin info from about:plugins

(as you can see, nothing about midi files. Does the quicktime plugin even handle midi files?)

Both MID and MIDI are there and both associated with QT.

Re: Firefox, Quicktime, embedded midi

Did you close and re-open Firefox after associating the files?

At the top of the about:plugins page is a link to the plugindoc page. Follow that through and check you have the right version installed James.

My association to QT for the .mid file is in the npqtplugin2.dll and I notice you don't have that - but - I'm running w2k and my plug-in version is also different.

Re: Firefox, Quicktime, embedded midi

Well, under folder options in control panel, midi files were associated with the QT player. I changed it to the QT plugin npqtplugin2.dll (which I do have--I have npqtplugin.dll through mpqtplugin7.dll).

Restarted FF. Nothing.

If I could just get the files associations in Firefox (tools>options>content>file types) to associate mid files with the QT plugin instead of the player, I have a feeling all would be well. But when I try to "change action" the option to use a plugin to open mid files is greyed out, and I can only choose applications.

In any case, thanks for trying to help.
