Evil cnn_adspaces pop up

I have my home page set to cnn.com . Whenever I open Firefox, a second window pops up w/an ad for their ad flavor of the day (Orbitz, Netflix,etc.) I have tried blacklisting it & I'm using NoScripts, too. I've even tried the add-on 'Blocksite' and then Firefox will still will open another window, but then it's empty. the address is always cnn_adspaces etc.

It will even do it when I have Firefox minimized & then it maximizes itself

Any ideas of how to get rid of this w/o not using CNN?

Making me CRAZY!

Re: cnn_adspaces pop up

Hi, welcome to TSF

Userstyles.org is a site I recently discovered that uses scripts to alter the way selected websites appear. You just need to download the Stylish addon, then restart Firefox.

Go to http://userstyles.org/styles/5345 and click the Show Code button. Highlight and copy the code text. Right-click the Stylish icon in the Firefox staus bar and select 'Manage Styles'. Click the Write button and type CNN.com in the Description box. Paste the code text into the window and click the Save button. Next time you go to CNN, the ads will have vanished and the layout will be optimized.

Code to paste into Stylish to block CNN ads:
Quote:
@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);

@-moz-document domain("cnn.com") {

.cnnBelT1ad, .cnn234Container, .cnnBelT1AdTop, .cnnSvcs88x31ad, .cnnMpPartners, .cnnPartnerTop, .cnnPartnerSubscribe, .cnnPadMpPartners, #cnnWeatherSponsor, .cnnMBSponsor, cnnMBSponTxt, .cnnWCAdBox, .cnnWireAdLtgBox, .cnnAdLinksRR, .cnnHtAdvertLnks, .cnnWireAdLtgBox {display:none !important}

}

Re: cnn_adspaces pop up

Hi - thank you for responding so quickly.
I did as you said & received this error - see below. I did try using it anyway, but it didn't work.
What should I do now?

Thanks

"This style has problems that may prevent it from working:

Unexpected end of file while searching for end of @media or @-moz-document rule. Unrecognized at-rule or error parsing at-rule '}'.

Unexpected end of file while searching for unknown at-rule.

Do you want to use it anyway?"

Re: cnn_adspaces pop up

The screenshot below is what I see using Firefox and the Userstyles CNN script. No popups or new tabs/windows. Does it look the same as yours or is anything missing?

Did you paste the full code, including the final } ?

In Firefox's Options, click the Content tab. Make sure 'Block popup windows' is enabled.

I use the NoScript addon to block unwanted ads, scripts, flash, java, etc. When I click its icon for the CNN page there's a list of addresses that can be blocked - cnn.com, turner.com and advertising.com. This last address is the one generating the ads, so add it to your Blocksites list, although I would have thought your NoScript would be blocking it anyway.
