Slow Webpage Loading
Hello,
First post, please bear with me. This problem began approximately a week ago. I own a Dell with Windows XP SP2, purchased in 2002. Let me preface what is below by saying that the same problem occurs when working with Internet Explorer. Before the problem started, I used to be able to go from website to website and the loading would be quick and painless. Streaming videos would also only take a few seconds to load and start-up and then not show endure any pauses throughout the playing of the video. I am at a university, so my ISP is not entirely known, but I'm sure my connection is pretty fast (or, at least, it was). Now, for about a week, it is painful how long I must wait when going from one website to another. This is true too with watching videos (from YouTube or something like that), there are significant increases in pauses, and the duration of these pauses are frustrating that I more often than not forgo even watching them. The nature of it also almost seems like the cookies/temp. files aren't working, as when I go from commonly visited websites it seems as though my browser/computer doesn't recognize the website at all and must load the page from scratch. Also, it seems like with that loading meter in the bottom right of the browser, it will go half way or even 90% loaded, and then all the sudden take a long pause or break before continuing to load. I have symantec antivirus, it's updated, and I have run that several times to try and catch anything that may be slowing the process of loading webpages. No hits have resulted from these scans. I have limited knowledge and have asked others, some suggest that I may have a sleeper virus or something to that affect where my computer sends out a bunch of e-mails and that may be the reason for my computer to slowly load webpages. I've narrowed it down to either being my connection, or my computer. But my hunch tells me it's my computer. Any suggestions, help, or ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! |

Re: Slow Webpage Loading
I had problems like this before, so i can only tell you what i did to sort my stuff out...
1. Try to have a minimum of themes/addons in your browser. 2. Delete all your history, so that it can start fresh (cache, cookies, temp etc...) 3. If the above fails, look for updates or try reinstalling of firefox. And if none of that works for you, maybe you should start thinking about a virus effecting your PC. PS: Some videos on youtube (ex: bad quality, poor sound etc) take longer to load and are more likely to be pausing a lot. Also, if you have any accelerators running for your vieo sites (speedbit), it wont work; youtube does not allow anymore accelerators. Hope this helps :) |

Re: Slow Webpage Loading
Thank you for the suggestions. I tried them, however, the problem still persists.
Anyone have suggestions for anti-virus software (preferably free?) as symantec is apparently not picking up this likely virus. Thanks so much! |

Re: Slow Webpage Loading
Well, thanks to all who helped. It seems as if the problem has been remedied. I got AVG, didn't find any virus with that scan. Then I uninstalled symantec, because I have heard that having two anti-virus software at the same time is not a good idea. Now, with symantec gone, I am able to navigate from website to website with little lag time, and watch videos quite easily now. I guess, what I'm trying to say, is that it seems like my computer is back to it's old self: working up to par.
I guess symantec was slowing my system down so much? Is that possible? Again, thanks to all who helped, and I will look into this forum's steps/suggestions for removing virus. Best! |
