(my computer uses windows vista)

I have an hp pavillion on which i brows using mozilla/ firefox. For the past month or so, i have encountered frequent problems regarding with my searches being misdirected to other websites. Sometimes the url address changes completely and sometimes it remains the same but still send me to a completely different website (even if i type in the exact url).This issue isn't completely isolated because the same thing happens when i use internet explorer. i have no idea what to do . i, for one, am not the most knowledgeble when it comes to tech support, and i would truly appreciate any and all help that can be provided.
