[SOLVED] Antivirus Question

Hello All,

I just got a new computer and would like to keep it in tip top shape. (I'm using WinXP with a 1Gig memory and a Pentium ( R ) D CPU 2.66 if that is helpful info.)

Since I almost live on the web I definitely need a really good firewall and anti-virus software that is compatible with Firefox, which is my default browser. Can anyone make some suggestions that are hopefully open source (I hate anything Microsoft)? If not open source then fine, what is the best firewall and anti-virus I can get?

Thanks for your help!!

Re: Antivirus Question

Hi, welcome to TSF

This is our current guide to general security software PC Safety and Security--What Do I Need?

More specific to Firefox, I would advise installing the following plugins:

NoScript (blocks java, flash, etc on a site-by-site basis, with an icon in the status bar for additional options)

CustomizeGoogle
(loads of features for stopping google snooping on your searches and web history, removing adverts, etc)

McAfee Site Advisor
(icon in status bar, red for potentially dangerous, green for ok)

Re: Antivirus Question

You should definitely get McAfee. They have an excellent anti-virus program. They do have a good firewall, but i just stick with Microsoft firewall. its the least complicated.

Re: Antivirus Question

The best firewall that I have ever used is the one from ZoneAlarm. It gives you full control over what goes out and comes into your computer.

Re: Antivirus Question

NOD32 is the best anti-virus program out there.
Founded in 1992, ESET is a global provider of security software for enterprises and consumers. ESET’s award-winning, antivirus software system, NOD32, provides real-time protection from known and unknown viruses, spyware, rootkits and other malware. NOD32 offers the smallest, fastest and most advanced protection available, with more Virus Bulletin 100 Awards than any other antivirus product.

I agree. I use NOD32 and haven't had a single problem since I put it on. It's also fast and doesn't take up a lot of RAM.

Re: [SOLVED] Antivirus Question

Hi,

I have tried a lot, so here's the combination I am using to have as best as possible a peace as I could.

For the antivirus, I am using Avast Free. (excellent).
For antispyware I am using AVG antispyware free.
For the firewall, I am using MacAFee.

So far I am happy and no hassles.

Cheers.
