[SOLVED] Firefox Very Slow

Hi,

Firefox has been very slow for about the last week or so.
When typing login info (for safelists, etc.) there is a delay in it
appearing in login areas. Scrolling is also delayed. Sometimes putting
the cursor on the right side scroll bar & clicking produces a
not responding message at top of browser. After loading FF,
it takes almost a minute for my homepage (Yahoo) to appear.

Yesterday I upgraded to V2 and not only is problem
still here, but it wiped out all my favorites list

Have rebuilt it with only items I use on a daily basis.
I found an add-on that saves favorites, which I installed yesterday.

I have no other add-ons.

Don't have any of these problems with IE or AOL.

Any ideas, suggestions etc. before I uninstall it & reinstall?
Restarts, defrag do nothing. No adware/spyware, virus'
etc. Scans are run every day.

All help appreciated.

Thanks,

Lou

Re: Firefox Very Slow

Hi Lou

Which is the previous version of Fx you had installed?

The bookmarks can be imported. Upgrade to version 2.0.0.4 (check which version in Help>About Mozilla).

When you upgrade, remove the older installation using Control panel>Add/Remove and then delete the Mozilla Firefox folder in C:\Program Files\. After that install a new version and see how it goes.

Your old profile can be imported after you have it fully working as default first.

Hi Kalim,

Prev. version was 1.5.11

I upgraded to v2.0.0.4 without removing/deleting old FF.

I'm now using Firemark (I think that's the name) to backup favorites.
New v2 didn't help...it's as slow as ever.

Until I can get this figured out, I'll be using IE most of the time.
This is getting to frustrating to use.

Thanks,

Lou

Re: Firefox Very Slow

Lou - follow my last suggestions to troubleshoot (i.e. remove Fx properly or you could face more problems). The default Firefox, installed correctly without bugs is quicker than IE 6 and 7, and yet more configurable.

Say good bye to IE as soon as you remove FF properly and download/install it from here :

Re: Firefox Very Slow

Thanks Kalim & Blackice,

Looks like that's the way to go. Will remove FF &
reinstall. Blackice, don't think I'll remove IE. It
works fine.

Will post results of reinstall after it's done.

Thanks,

Lou

Re: Firefox Very Slow

Just FYI, removing Fx installation files does not remove your personal settings/config so you don't have anything to worry about - they will still remain in the new installation. Those files contain nothing but the files needed to start/run Fx in the Program Files directory.

Kalim,

Did as you suggested...removed ff with "add/remove" function, deleted FF folders, reinstalled. Unfortunately, problem still there
Thought it might have been fixed because FF loaded quicker than it had been, but tried a few things and still same problem.

Open it "Fx Safe Mode" through the Start menu option and then see.

Re: Firefox Very Slow

Well that's not characteristic of standard Firefox installation. Something is wrong.

In Fx, under Tools>Options>Advanced>Network>Connection Settings choose Direct Connection (if it's DSL/Cable) and OK.

Then have Fx closed and in Start Menu choose Profile Manager under the Mozilla Firefox group entry. Remember the profile name which is highlighted when it opens and choose "Create new profile". At the bottom, uncheck "Don't ask at startup". Go ahead and launch Firefox with the new profile. Then tell me how that is.

Also, let's have some real numbers now. Time how fast it takes to loadup your homepage.

Then whatever your homepage is (let's say yahoo.com), go to Start>Run>type: cmd hit Enter and type: ping yahoo.com and hit Enter.
Right-click in the command-line window, choose "Select All" with your mouse and then press Enter.
Paste the results of the ping back.

Kalim,

Item 1....already there (DSL)

Item 2....Firefox group entry only has 2 items; Mozilla Firefox and
Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode)

Item 3....Loading Homepage (Yahoo) approx 10 sec. It's a little faster
now than it was before the reinstall. Use to take at least 30 sec.

Item 4....Ping check results...

Re: Firefox Very Slow

Sorry Lou, it seems your thread fell 4 pages deep in my subscribed list, hence, away from sight.

Thanks for letting me know.

OK. Do you have many toolbars installed (even in IE)?

I've tested a brand spanking new Fx and Yahoo took 7 page seconds to load completely. Which means you're not far off. I have a 50MB DL/35MB UL network connection though aswell.

Close Firefox and reopen it on www.techsupportforum.com to see how long it takes for the full index page loadup.

For reference, mine takes 14 seconds and in my IE 7, it takes 15 seconds. See what you get with both browsers.

Kalim,

Have 1 toolbar on each with 4 links each.

Not sure what you mean by "Close Firefox and reopen it on www.techsupportforum.com"

When I opened FF just now home page loaded completely very fast.
This forum loaded fast, just a few seconds. Yesterday, i believe it took
over 3 minutes (Yahoo) to load completely. It varies every time I open FF.

Re: Firefox Very Slow

That looks like an ISP connection issue - if the Firefox settings and profile is default, Firefox won't load the same page at different times, at drastically different speeds, in and by itself. It'll be the ISP and your connection that makes it slow and fast.

The best way to test is, open Fx and IE - at the same time. Then open www.techsupportforum.com on both browsers at the same time (as similar as you can), to see the speed difference between the two. If it's similar, then you have other network issues rather than with the browser.

Re: Firefox Very Slow

Kalim,

Both took 4 seconds.

After I finished typing the above msg., I looked up at the screen
and only the letter "B" was there. It took a few seconds before
the rest of the msg. filled in.

Again, this only happens with FF.

Lou

PS...When I first opened FF today it took 40 seconds
for home page (Yahoo) to start to open. It took an
additional 2 min. 20 seconds before it was completely
loaded. This only happens with FF. It's loading time is
very sporadic. Now it's only taking a few seconds to load.

When I open IE, home page only takes a few seconds,
every time, to load completely.

Re: Firefox Very Slow

Hi Lou

This issue can be very frustrating and lengthy to troubleshoot.

Before we move on, I'll need to know if you've tested both of them at the same time and found Fx considerably slower?

You need to catch that moment.

Try this: First open XP Security center (in Control Panel) and start the XP SP2 firewall. Then close any personal software firewalls you run.

Have both browsers closed, and try the above tests on each browser again, both at very similar times.

If you don't catch the culprit as the firewall, try the AV and any security software in the same fashion - although be very quick, as there's chances of infection.

Re: Firefox Very Slow

Hi Kalim,

"This issue can be very frustrating and lengthy to troubleshoot"

The key word being "frustrating"

I know how hard it is, especially when you can't actually see
the problem when it happens. I do appreciate your patience.

When I tested them this A.M., both browsers were open. I copied
the support url and pasted it into IE and right away into FF. Couldn't
have been more than 2-3 seconds apart.
Each took 4 seconds to load.

The only firewall I have is the XP SP2, and that's always on.
I also checked to make sure FF is allowed & it is.

There are no settings in my AV (bitdefender 9) for me to change.
Do you want me to disable it before trying test again?

Have no other security software except my Anti-Spyware prog.
(Spysweeper).
