Google toolbar mess
I left the computer for awhile... I came back and it said "congratulations, google toolbar has been installed". I didn't want google toolbar, so I ran a search for google toolbar and then I deleted everything I found.
Now my bookmarks are all gone! Firefox is also acting weird. Every time I log in to something it asks me if I want Firefox to remember my password, which it never did before. It's annoying. There's also a "bookmark bar" at the top of the screen that I can't get rid of. What do I do to get things back the way they were? Is there any way to retrieve my bookmarks? |

Re: Google toolbar mess
Anyyyoonnee... if there's no way to get my bookmarks back, can anyone tell me how to get rid of the bookmark bar, get it to stop asking me if I want it to remember passwords, and get it to stop showing recent addresses I typed into everything everytime I start to type to search?

Re: Google toolbar mess
Hi Smythe,
I'm not very clear on what you did. When you "deleted" the Google Toolbar, did you uninstall it or just delete a bunch of files? For the other things, let's try the simple first. At the top of Firefox, Click Tools>Options>Privacy tab and uncheck "Remember what I enter in forms and the search bar". Now click the Security tab and uncheck "Remember Passwords for sites. Click OK and that should take care of those 2 problems. To get rid of the Bookmark bar, right click on a blank area of the toolbar and uncheck "Bookmarks Toolbar". To replace your Bookmarks, Go to your Bookmark Backup folder Located at "C:\Documents and Settings\User name\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\cvjfexbc.default" and move a copy out to the profile folder. Hope that helps, T.

Re: Google toolbar mess
Thanks for the response.
I just deleted a bunch of files, whatever said "google searchbar" when I searched my computer. The privacy/search thing you suggested worked. When I right-click on the bookmarks toolbar, there's no option to delete. I found the bookmarks backup folder (hurray), but I'm not sure about the profile folder. I tried putting it on and next to a folder that said profiles but my bookmarks haven't been restored. I also have the unwanted change of red dotted lines appearing under some words when I'm typing a message (like this one). Is there anyway to get rid of that? Thanks again for you help. |

Re: Google toolbar mess
Whenever you "just delete a bunch of files", you're messing up your system. Next time use the program's uninstall utility or go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Attempting to uninstall manually often leaves files and registry entries behind, leading to the problems you're experiencing now.
The Profiles folder is hidden. To see it and replace your bookmarks, open Windows Explorer and go to Tools > Folder Options > View. Click 'Show hidden files and folders'. To get rid of the red dotted lines, open Firefox and go to Tools > Options > Advanced > General. Disable 'Check my spelling as I type'. How did all these unwanted changes happen when you just left the computer for a while? If you share the computer with other people in your home or at work and you want to keep them off your computer, hit Windows key + L to lock the screen, then enter your logon password to get back to Windows.

![]() There could be folders with just numbers or that don't have the name of the program. Not to mention all the stuff in the registry. If you need to you can install the "Google searchbar" again and then uninstall it from "Add/Remove programs". Unless there are problems with your system, you should leave it as is and learn from the mistake. Quote:
