Thumbs Down YouTube Videos=failure

Hi. I own a laptop...a Compaq Presario 1200 to be in fact. Yes, its quite old, as it runs Windows 2000 Professional and has only 192 MB of physical Ram...

But that is fine. I only wanted this laptop for word and internet surfing. Thats all. The problem is, every SINGLE video I try to view online, appears to lag..regardless of its source, size, etc. The only way I can have a halfway decent viewing experience is to set the visual quality down to "Low."

I run wifi at 54.0 mbps on a 802.11g card. I use Mozilla Firefox, updated to the latest version... I'm not quite sure whats up. Maybe the age really is actually showing... Here are the specs:

OS: Windows 2000 Professional (SP4, all updates as far as I know..)
Processor: AMD K6-2 3D Processor ~460mhz-475. Different programs read different things. Either way, its slow. (For the record, the 460 was on dxdiag.)
Memory: 192 MB RAM
Direct X: 9.0c
Sound: VIA AC 97 (integrated, running on Full acceleration)

Need to know more? Just yell. =P

Thanks for your time guys.

Re: YouTube Videos=failure

*Bump*

Anybody have an answer? Is it just the age of my computer? Is the AMD K6 at 460 with 192 ram and integrated video card with 8mb too weak..for videos?

(And yes..the card is specifically a Trident CyberBlade-i7..integrated video solution. 8 mb memory size...)

Re: YouTube Videos=failure

Do you have any problems watching videos in a media player, either as a window or fullscreen?

Does this happen with all online media filetypes, like Windows Media Player, QuickTime, RealPlayer?

Is your internet connection generally good for downloads and surfing?

Can you watch online videos in Internet Explorer?

Which graphics driver do you have installed?

Go to Start > Run > Display tab. Are the 3 DirectX Features buttons enabled?

Re: YouTube Videos=failure

1. I have not tried watching videos in media player...I will get back to you as soon as possible on that..

2. This lag in videos seems to happen online with the Flash player that YouTube uses.. I have not tried an online WMP file or Quicktime, realplayer, etc.

3. The internet connection is fine. I had a newer computer here that could watch videos on Youtube quite well...

4. Haven't tried I.E...will get back to you.

5. The driver that came with this thing. Its so archaic I doubt there is an update... (The driver is dated in 99'

6. I don't know what you mean by this... Start, Run, Display???? 3 options??? I'm lost...a bit more detail and I think I'll get it....

Thanks though for this response...=) I'll get back to you on this..

Sorry, I missed out the most important word, dxdiag, to bring up the DirectX diagnostics window. Click the Start button at the bottom left of your desktop, then click Run. This opens a small box. Type dxdiag and click the OK button, then click the Display tab at the top of the dxdiag window.

This is just to make sure DirectX is working properly, but I think the problem is with Flash, codecs or your graphics driver. We'll get a better idea when you've tested some videos in Media Player and other filetypes online.

Re: YouTube Videos=failure

NO PROBLEMS watching videos in media player..either window or full screen. Did this online as well. No issues..just normal buffering action..

Internet Explorer: Still fails with You Tube..

Drivers are UPDATED...(according to DriverAgent)

Direct X features are all enabled...

I probably just need to update Adobe...

Re: YouTube Videos=failure

Updated Adobe..

It's still slow. Only Low Quality gives passable results..

Damn, this sucks.

Re: YouTube Videos=failure

What is your desktop resolution, and have you tried playing online videos at a lower resolution to compensate for your low Video RAM?

I've had a look at the most common online video sites and they all say you need minimum 128mb RAM (512mb recommended), 16mb Video RAM and the latest Windows Media Player and Flash. Might be time for an upgrade.

Re: YouTube Videos=failure

8mb video Ram is what I have...

My TOTAL amount of Ram is 192mb, but cut by 8 for compensation with the integrated video solution..

Soooo that leaves 184 RAM...

I guess I am a little under-prepared.. but I would think I'd be able to run at lead midlevel...
