is there a way to manage bookmarks in explorer?

hi everybody,,, my first post,,,

i like firefox but the bookmarks manager leaves a LOT to be desired. is there a way to manage your bookmarks in explorer the way you can manage your favorites there? it appears to me that firefox wants to confine you to organizing your bookmarks only from within its own bookmarks manager (which is an awful utility). is this true?

help, please,,, i've got a TON of bookmarks to organize and it's very tedious with firefox's manager.

thanks.

Maybe I'm just used to Firefox's way of handling bookmarks but it seems OK to me. If you find it lacking though, there is an extension called 'PlainOldFavorites' that might be the answer. This lets you use IE's Favorites for bookmarks within Firefox instead of (or in addition to) Firefox's bookmarking system.

great, thanks very much, martt. one more question, please. where are firefox's bookmarks physically filed (what's the folder path)? i've looked everywhere and can't find them. the reason for the question is,, i made the mistake of continuing to use IE and have a bunch of "favorites" that i'd like to dump into bookmarks but can't find the location of the bookmarks in order to do that. also, do you know if it's possible to dump bookmarks back into favorites? any help would be appreciated,,, thanks.

Firefox profiles are stored in C:\Documents and Settings\"user name"\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

Note: This is a hidden folder, so to enable the viewing of 'Hidden files and folders' open Windows Explorer and go to Tools > Folder Options > View tab > 'Show hidden files and folders'. Click Apply and then OK.

Your bookmarks are in a html file in this hidden folder.

I'm not sure if you can import IE favorites into an existing Firefox bookmarks file. It might overwrite them rather than adding.

EDIT: From http://kb.mozillazine.org/Import_bookmarks
Quote:
This article explains how to import bookmarks from a file or from another browser into Firefox or Mozilla Suite. The imported bookmarks will be added to the current bookmarks.

Bookmarks in Firefox aren't stored as individual shortcuts like they are in IE's Favorites. They are stored in a single file called 'bookmarks.html'. The default location of the file is:

'C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxx\bookmarks.html' (xxxxxxx is a string of random letters and numbers).

There is a Firefox extension that will export Firefox bookmarks into the Favorites folder (in the format IE uses) but this perhaps wouldn't be very suitable for you because it overwrites all existing Favorites. It's an OK extension if your main browser is Firefox and your bookmarks are in Firefox's format. Then the extension can be used to update (overwrite) Favorites so that they are the same as the bookmarks in Firefox.

There may be an extension that would export individual bookmarks from Firefox to the Favorites folder but I'm not aware of it. If you haven't made too many bookmarks in Firefox, it might be best to open the page in Firefox, copy the URL to the Clipboard, open IE, paste in and go to the URL and then bookmark it. A bit long-winded if you have alot of bookmarks to transfer though.

For information purposes, here is a link to the extension mentioned, just in case you ever find it useful in the future. Please remember though, it overwrites all bookmarks in your Favorites folder with whatever is in Firefox's bookmarks. This extension hasn't been updated to work with the current version of Firefox, so it would need the version number updating. There are a couple of ways to do that but perhaps the easiest is to Install Mr Tech Local Install. This will bump up incompatible extensions version numbers, which mostly makes them work. Also do a search here using the word 'bookmarks'. There may be other bookmarks extensions that would suit.

Edit: Sorry koala - We must have been composing posts at the same time. Mine is far too long as usual

You can organize your bookmarks with Advanced URL Catalog a bookmark manager compatible with all browsers.
