[SOLVED] Firefox won't start anymore (Moved from Microsoft Computing)
I am hoping this is the right forum to post this because i don't know where else it would go.
Only IE works now, when i click on mozilla, it says, "This application has failed to start because plds4.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." And i have tried uninstalling, and downloading and installing again.. but the same exact thing is happening |

This is a component of Gaim. Gaim is a multi-protocol instant messaging client that provides the standard IM text messaging features. Why your recieving this does not make sense.
http://www.fbmsoftware.com/spyware-n...lds4_dll/2882/ You can try running the System File Checker Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in: sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized) (Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow) This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. In all likelihood you will be prompted to insert the Windows XP CD. You can also d/l plds4.dll from HERE and see if it helps your issue.

Navigate to Program files> Mozilla Firefox and look for that file and rename it to .old
Then try placing it in that folder again. You may need to show hidden files and folders

Little bugger.....ok you stated you uninstalled and then reinstalled with the same outcome. Lets try this
Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove Mozilla/Firefox again. Then go to Program Files and delete the entire folder. Then click start / run and type in regedit. When the registry editor opens, click Edit then Find type in firefox and click find next. When it finds anything related to firefox it will show in the right pane, highlight it and delete it, then press F3 to continue the search. Once it has finished go back to Edit and Find and type in Mozilla and do the same for it. After that has finished reboot the computer and go to this link and try d/l and installing again http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ You may want to backup your registry before editing

Try deleting the folder while in Safe Mode
Use the link in my signature to backup your registry, if you accidently delete something while editing it, you can always revert to the backup you make What the heck happened to your Firefox, I mean did this happen all of the sudden? I have never ran into someone having issues with Firefox, seems alittle odd. I am going to move this to the Alternative Computing Mozilla/Firefox Browsers Forum, those technicians may have a better alternative to resoving your issue

nobody ever tells me a good way to go to it, like F8 or F4 or all these random things to press.. none work for me sigh i really have no idea why this is happening, could it be a virus or something? Sorry about all this And isn't there some program that can delete a file no matter what? I remember something of this sort that somebody on this site recommended to me for a file |

I can't give any real reason why reinstalling wouldn't cure the problem because the file and any Registry entries to do with it, are part of the Firefox installation as far as I can see. Are you installing Firefox using the Firefox installer.exe or by using the ZIP version?
I have 3 copies of plds4.dll on my computer. These are in the Program Files directories of Firefox, Thunderbird, and Open Office. As far as I know there is no malware on my computer, so these look to be legitimate files. The only reason I can think of why the file can't be deleted, renamed or overwritten is because Windows is using it when you try to do any of those operations. The same for the entire folder too perhaps. For that to happen, Firefox must still be running somehow. When you close Firefox, is there any entry (entries) for it listed in 'Task Manager'? If so, close it down and then try opening Firefox. Checking for this and closing entries would also be necessary before trying a reinstallation of Firefox. If you can't get anywhere by pursuing this line, I think an absolutely clean start might be necessary. If this can't be done in Windows Normal Mode, you'll need to persist in getting into Windows Safe Mode. Constantly dabbing at the F8 key while Windows is booting works for me. Once running in Safe Mode, uninstall using Add/Remove Programs and then manually remove the Mozilla Firefox folder in Program Files. Also delete the Profiles folder in C:\Documents and Settings..... Take a copy of 'Bookmarks.html' and store it somewhere safe before deleting the Profiles folder. There is a utility for removing files that Windows won't let you delete. This is called 'MoveOnBoot'. I've never used it and I don't know what effect this might have if used on your current Firefox installation. If Firefox doesn't work anyway, I suppose you have nothing to lose by trying it. http://www.snapfiles.com/get/moveonboot.html

If that doesn't work, I haven't any suggestions other than those already made. The Profiles folder may not be causing the problem you have at present but I think it has to be eliminated from being a possible cause of the original trouble. Since a clean start for Firefox may be needed in this case, I'd prefer to delete it.
The Profile is a big part of Firefox. It is not touched or affected in any way when uninstalling, reinstalling or upgrading Firefox. Therefore, if any trouble is being caused by something the Profiles folder, it won't be cured by uninstalling - reinstalling - upgrading. If you intend to stay a Firefox user, it might be as well to familiarise yourself with what goes on inside the Profiles folder and how to work with it. It would take an awful lot of writing here to explain things further but fortunately, Mozilla has already written lots on the subject: http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/profile and for deeper reading: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder EDIT: Did you check out the 'Task Manager' part? Look carefully. I've often not been able to spot entries straightaway when looking down the list.
