I just downloaded Firefox 2.0 and tried to set my homepage. I clicked on use current page and went to click OK to save the changes. I think usually when you click OK the settings will be saved and the box will close this did not happen. When I restarted Firefox my settings were not saved. I researched and was told to type about:config and go to browser.startup.homepage and set it there but still no luck. Browser still starts with welcome page.

Preferences that can't be stored are often to do with a corrupt localstore.rdf file (Profiles folder). Delete the file when Firefox is closed. Firefox will automatically create a new one when it starts up. You will have to set up toolbar appearance and preferences again but hopefully all would be OK after that.
Also, try deleting the cache. This isn't too likely to affect the problem but it's a quick thing that can be done when almost anything goes wrong. Even if it doesn't do any good, it does no harm either and it's something that should be done occasionally anyway. A bloated cache causes some unlikely faults sometimes. If the above fails, have a read of this. It will save writing it again
