Bookmark issue
I'm running Firefox 2.0 on the 64 bit version of windows XP.
I also experienced the same issue in a previous version but I fixed it by installing again which isn't working this time around. Basically, after a restart(I think it was because of a crash), all my bookmarks completely disappeared and the firefox window no longer starts maximized, it always starts with a window size that varies with my screen resolution. Furthermore, when I attempt to add new bookmarks, there are 4 folders available, first bookmarks, then bookmarks toolbar, then the separator, then another bookmarks folder and another bookmarks toolbar folder. If I try to add to the first bookmarks folder it does nothing. If I add to the second the bookmark goes in but I have to edit its properties to get the name to show up. On an unrelated note. Restore session is cool. My comp crashed while I was typing this and it saved the text. |

It sounds as if Firefox has opened with a new Profile, rather than the one where your bookmarks and settings are. Try going to the Start > Run box and typing firefox.exe -p. The Profile Manager box should open. Is there more than one Profile listed there? If so, set the option in the box so that the Profile Manager always opens and try starting Firefox with each Profile. Hopefully one of them will contain your settings and bookmarks.
If this keeps happening, I'd recommend deleting any Profiles and letting Firefox create a single new one. Rescue a copy of Bookmarks.html from the old Profile first, then you can use it in the new one. Last edited by martt; 11-02-2006 at 04:53 AM. |

If you do a search of the entire C:\ drive, can you find more than one copy of 'Bookmarks.html'. There should be four in a folder called 'bookmarkbackups'. Have a look to see if your set of bookmarks is in one of those. 'bookmarks.bak' is another file worth looking into (put it on the Desktop and rename it to 'Bookmarks.html' to view it). If none of those contain your bookmarks, it looks as if the bookmarks are gone unfortunately. Do you have them in Internet Explorer? You could probably import the bookmarks from there if so.
If you do have to start again, perhaps do it with a completely new Profile. Manually delete the Profiles folder located at 'C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\' before opening Firefox. A new Profiles folder will be automatically created. If you would rather not do that, just delete the localstore.rdf file (Profiles folder) when Firefox is closed. You would still have to set preferences up again but they would hopefully be stay put after that. |
