Hello, I am using an iMac G4 with OS 10.3.9, and whenever I get an error message, especially in Safari or MSN, but often in other programmes as well, the programme in question crashes and I have to submit a bug report. I have done various virus scans and tried to look up tips everywhere, but after a few weeks, I am getting impatient.

ok, the error message is shown because the apps crashed, not the cause of the crash. the bug reports are to let apple know what is wrong, and if a lot of other have the same problem, then they can remedy it. what do you mean by msn? is it messenger, or internet explorer, or some other microsoft app? also what are the other apps that are crashing, and have you got the latest updates for those apps?
please post the crash log for safari. to do that, open 'console', found in the 'applications>utilities' folder. after it is open, click the button in the top left of the window labeled 'logs'. now click on the little triangle next to '~/library/logs'. next click on the triangle next to 'crashreporter'. select 'safari.crash.log'. this file will have all your crash info. just scroll up to the top of the last error (errors are separated by '**********' and start with 'host name' ). just select it like you would in any text editor, copy, and then paste in a post. when you post it, you can remove what is next to host name if you like for privacy reasons, but leave everything else as is. this will let those who look at it know what was the cause of the crash. then maybe someone here will be able to figure out how to help you.

Thanks, I will post that (it seems really long though, sorry if I am posting too much, I know nothing about computers beyond how to use one), but it isn't messages telling me about crashes that I see. For example in MSN (by which I did mean messenger, sorry), I get a message telling me that MSN has signed off unexpectedly, for example, because I logged off of the internet without signing out first, or if I try to sign out with out closing my conversation windows. These are the kind of messages I get before a crash, and I used to get these messages all the time, but it never did anything. I mostly use MSN and Safari, so I can't think of any off-hand, I think apple-works did sometimes, but only sometimes, most other programmes never had an error with which they could crash. I have noticed that iTunes has never crashed. I had to disable the preference in my Trash asking me if I was sure I wanted to delete everything permanently because the Trash would close every time I tried to empty it. Finder in general closes as well, for example if I try to delete things from a CD-RW and it asks me, again, if I am sure I want to delete these.

thanks for the error log, i'll see if i can find anything. as far as the trash, when you empty the trash, it always closes any open trash windows. that is part of the os. same with deleting on a cd-rw. as far as appleworks crashing, thats becasue apple has not updated it in forever. and if msn and safari crash after you turn your internet off, then you may need to make sure that you close them first. also, are you using the newest msn for mac? i had alot of problem withit until i got the newest one, and no more problems for me.

No, that's the problem, it doesn't empty the trash or clear the CD-RW. I don't have chance to press 'OK' to empty it. I do have mostly the new versions, but I think I don't have the newest one of somethings (dial-up makes you lazy). I know appleworks is buggy, I don't use it anymore, but it started crashing around the same time as everything else. I am using the MSN 5.0 for Mac, which I think is the newest, but ever since I have had a Mac my MSN has been kind of buggy in itself and signing off on its own, so it crashes then. I do take extra care now with my internet, but sometimes errors happen on their own in Safari, and I don't have enough time to see them before it crashes.Thanks again.
