iPod on the fritz
I've got somethin' similar wrong with my 4G 20GB....I just updated it w/ the 01-2006 update, and it's wanting me to plug it into a wall adapter....I've tried both a FiWi adapter and a Monster Cable car adapter, and it still shows the plug-in icon......my computer won't even recognize the ipod when I plug it in......what the heck do I need to do?

have you tried reseting it? go here and find out how to reset your ipod model. plug it into the power adaptor that came w/it - if it did not come w/one, then plug it into your computer w/the computer on - and then follow the instructions to reset it.

Ah, I've tried plugging it in to both the comp and the wall, and the resetting - no luck whatsoever. It happened right after I updated it. It mentioned something about needing to reflash in order to complete the update, and then wanted me to plug in into a "higher power source."

did you let the updater do its full thing? it will mount the ipod, check it, then unmount it, update it, then reset it, check it again, and lastly mount it again. if its disturbed at all in this process, then it can permanently disable your ipod. and have you always unmounted the ipod and made sure the screen says safe to disconnect before unplugging it (i have found you must dismount the ipod before turning off the computer too)? if the ipod updater does not see the ipod when you plug it into the computer, then you must take the ipod to a local apple store and hope that they can get it running again.
-edit- what kind of computer are you using this on?

I'm running it on a WinXP Dell 5100.......and I'm not too sure if it's been disconnected or not while hooked up. Also, is there any cheap way to get it fixed? There's no warranty on this pod, and the manufacturer's warranty runs out on the 29th.

the only way to find out what the cost is, is to call apple and ask. i don't know their rates having never had any service. but if you decide to scrap it, let me know, i'll send you a postage paid box.

I ran into the same problem today - called the local Apple store and the guy there told me to plug the ipod in with the AC wall adapter. I had to go to a friends' house to do this, but it fixed the problem. The sales guy said that it has to flash the ROM once the update has been run & it can't do this on USB power.
