Evil appleworks 6 problem

Every time I try to save a revised file to Appleworks 6, a reminder pops up an says The file cannot be opened "because it has been deleted."
this also happens when i try to "Save As"
when i call up a file and close it with no changes, I have no problem
i have os 10.3.2
has Appleworks 6 gone Evil?

i should think i have permission to write the file. why wouldn't I?
However, i notice that i can bypass the problem by shifting work to stickies or text edit then rebooting appleworks.
now if i can only get spell check installed.

spell checking is built in to the os. if the word is underlined in red, then 'control-click' and guesses will be at the top. or you can highlight the word, then goto the menu 'textedit>services>spelling'. one of those should be in 10.3 (its been a while since i've used 10.3, but i think it has the services menu if not the contextual menu).

the files are in folders on the desktop. there's nothing to say I cannot write in it.
but it seems that when i make changes to my appleworks files, the bottom pages go blank (and I have some documents 200 pages long) and I cannot save because the sign pops up and says the file has been deleted.
