HD problem/software problem?

Have G4 with 20 and 40 meg drives. Took out the 20 and set the jumpers to master on the 40. It was running with 10.3 and 9.2. Now it won't complete startup. I reloaded 10.2 and it will load through the logon logo then switches to a slashed circle and stops. I reload 9.2 and it just never completes startup. Norton shows the 40 gig drive as master. I have selected through the Norton tools for the 40 to be startup drive but nothing works. Also, is there a drive data transfer program for MACs like there is for PCs? Thanks for all suggestions.

as far as a drive copyer, check this out ---> http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html.
as far as your starting problem, it sounds like the oses are damaged, and need to be repaired, most likely reinstalled. are you sure that the jumper is set right?

Thanks Sinclair. I suspected the OS disks were currupted but I tried three different sets - 10.1, 10.2 and 10.3. I guess I'll go buy a 10.4 and try that. And thanks for the tip on carbon copier.

Finally got it to boot up in 10.2 but it starts with administrator screen. The username icon is correct but when I put in the password it says invalid. After three tries it gives the hint and that is exactly what I have been trying. At one time I knew how to get to the root and reset the password but I've forgotten. Can anyone help? Thanks

if you have the install cd, boot from it and then one of the menus from the os installer has reset password.
if the reset password doesn't work, run the installer and see if it can repair the os on the hd.
when i said bad os, i ment on the hd, not the installers, unless they are scratched up bad, or are burns. but they are not burns, i hope.
