Hi, and welcome to TSF. I know in Linux that prompt after an install or upgrade means that the graphical interface wasn't configured properly. Though I don't know why it doesn't recognize your login. And do you have a root password? you could attempt to login as root. Having root privlages allows you to rewrite the password file. But if it was me, I think I would run back through the install, see if there's something I had missed in the configuration.

it asks for my username and password. I can type in my username and i can see it on the screen. My password on the other hand...i cant see and the cursor dosnt move..so im actually not sure if its allowing me to type anything..so maybe thats why it keeps saying incorrect password...unless the non moving cursor in normal...if anyone can help me with this it would be great. thanks again

The non-moving cursor is normal when typing a password.

The password not appearing and the cursor not moving is actually the normal behavior of the CLI login utility.
First thing I'd try would be to boot to the Mac OS X install disk and try to repair permissions from Disk Utility. You could also try logging in as root (if you have root enabled). |

i got the mac osx installation cd in and first tried to reset my password. this is what is says
" select the mac osx disk containing a password to reset" mac osx installation cd is the only option. select user of the volume to reset password. "system admin root" is the only choice. enter password reenter pass then it says "password entered has not been saved for the user system admin. You may not have permission to edit disk or general failure has occured. then i tried reinstallin macosx and i can only get as far as the destination location. the only thing in this box is the install cd...no hard drive or any other option. i dont know what wrong with my system..but the infomation the i have got so far has been helpful..thanks...feel free to keep sending me suggestion. thanks again |

Did you try to repair permissions from Disk Utility? It should be under the same menu as the reset password option. If the computer is booting to a Darwin/BSD login prompt, then it's recognizing the hard drive, so you should be able to run Disk Utility on it.
