liquid damage. Help!

my much beloved MacBook recently suffered a terrible accident when a guest spilled red wine on it. They were afraid to tell me right away so it sat for a while with the computer on until I found out and shut it down. Now it won't turn back on. Is there anything I can do at home or should I bring it to the mac store without passing go? If I do that what can I expect? Will they be able to fix it, will I have to replace the harddrive or something or will I have to buy a new computer? Any help would be appreciated. I'm freaking out here!

Re: liquid damage. Help!

Of course it is repairable, but at a price. I think you will find that the price to have it fixed will be almost as much as the cost for a new laptop. The person that spilled on it should own up and pay for the repair/replacement. My guess is that the motherboard is hosed, as the Macbooks do not have separate keyboards like the iBooks did. The hard drive is sealed, so it should be fine. If you are really adventurous, you do get your hands on some deionized water, take the Macbook completely apart, and wash what you see off in it without anything but the deionized water. Then you'll want to let it air dry for at least a week or so before reassembling it and trying to turn it on. Being it was on for a while after the spill, the chances of this working are next to none.

Re: liquid damage. Help!

thanks. I've read that some people have used rubbing alcohol (as opposed to deionized water I suppose) is that safe to try?

Thanks again.

I don't know. With deionized water, there is nothing in the water to leave a residue to cause shorts in the printed circuit board.
