OS: os x 10.4.11

final crash?

a tough one, probably a terminal situation. My Powerbook, running OS X 10.4.11, had been slowing down. Then my Symantec antivirus would not run. Then Safari disappeared, or at least would not boot up. I downloaded a new Symantec from a secure (university) site, and it seemed to be working again (bit I had to power down before I could do a full scan). I just got home and when I turned on the machine I got a very slow start sequence, followed by this:
[Date/time]: luanchd:com:applenibindd: excited abnormally" Bad system call
[Date/time]:launchd:applenibbindd:respawing too quickly! throttling
[Date/time]: launcd:applenibbinddd"too many failures in succession
I have no name!#:

Re: final crash?

Well, your first problem is you have Symantec installed, and I'm not joking either. That is some of the worst mainstream blotware out there. I have only seen it kill computers, not help them. Second, how much free space do you have on the hard drive? You should always have at least 10Gig free at all times for the OS to do it's own thing. What happened when you turn on the computer and hold down the shift key as soon as you hear the bong? It should go into safe mode, and feel quicker, does it?

Re: final crash?

Amen on losing symantec as soon as this is fixed. I did get in via the safe mode, tho' it's still slow. Still have 71.5 GB (out of 111.5) memory available, so I don't think that's the issue. Any recommendations other than symantec in case this is malware or virus?

Re: final crash?

I doubt it's malware, unless you have been to some really shady sites, and entered in your admin password to boxes that randomly pop up. You did say it's a Powerbook, so that means it has a G4 CPU, making it an older Mac. On laptops, they will also seem to run slower over time just because the hard drive is getting old, and is getting slower itself. Also, how many things do you have auto starting when you log in?
