Controlling Process in OS X 10.5.8

Hi I was wondering if any one could forward me to a program or technique that will allow me to control what process are allowed to run on my computer.

The problem I'm having is that I have process that I do not want nor do I feel comfortable running in my background. For example HP Product Research, this steals cpu that I need and also is probably spying on me(I don't like the idea of giving corporations information on my habits even though it is relatively impossible to avoid). So yeah any help with this would be great since I cannot find any feature on mac and all my startpage searches come up null.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I feel it vital for me to be able to manage my computer and what is running on it.

Thanks in advance

Have you Googled uninstalling the processes? This is the only real way to control them.

You can use the terminal to view all processes running. Applications/Utilities/Terminal

PHP Code:
ps -ef
will show you all processes running. This will at least confirm that something is running that you don't want to be.
