flashing Question Mark on start-up
My Pismo Powerbook G3 has been working ok since i installed a new HD and OSx 10.4.6. Then just stopped responding showing a spinning coloured wheel, and needed to be forced to shut down. Now it only starts to a flashing question mark and once in a blue moon it will boot but then within minutes it has stopped responding again.
I have re-installed OSX, re-selected start-up disk and repaired disk permissions. It will boot to CD but won't let me re-install OSX (no destination volume displayed), wont let me select the hard drive as the start up disk as no HD shown and wont let me repair the HD as all the options are greyed out (the HD is showing but only by its brand name not Pismo HD). I have reset PRAM NVRAM, tried starting with all sorts of key combinations, but all I get is the flashing question mark. Start up Manager shows a curved arrow and a straight arrow and nothing happens with either. Any ideas? Thanks |

Re: flashing Question Mark on start-up
Either the hard drive is bad, or the hard drive controller is bad. Being the disk does show up in Disk Utility, I'd say the drive is bad. I'd put the old drive back (if it was still working) and see if it works now. If it still has this issue, I'd say the controller is bad, which means that it's laptop days are done, as it is part of the mainboard, and not worth replacing due to it's age, and that any part would be used, and could die at any time too.
