Problems reinstalling the operating system

i dropped a weight on my mac and when i start the machine it just pulls up the gray screen with apple logo on it, but it won't go further than that. I was told to reinstall the operating system by apple support, so that's what I did and it finished installation. But when i told it to transfer the information from the previous "volume" onto the new one, it stalled when it was transferring the applications folder. so should i shut it off or do something else? and if i do shut it off will i have to reinstall the operating system again?

Sounds like the hard drive is going bad. You can turn it off, it shouldn't effect the OS, just the apps you were trying to transfer.
