Need help connecting G3 to network
I have a PC running Win XP connected to a wired router that has only a printer and the PC networked. I have no DSL or other broad band Internet connection. We just acquired an Apple G3 computer that appears to have a plug in for a cable to connect it to the router. The problem is that I have absolutely no experience with an Apple computer.
What do I have to do to get the G3 on the network. Sometime in the future we will be connecting to a DSL, but for now we just want to share the printer and files. |

Re: Need help connecting G3 to network
What OS version is the Mac running? You can find out by going to the Apple menu (upper left corner of your screen) then selecting "About This Mac". The version information will help us figure out a solution.
Mac OS 9 and earlier do not have support for Windows-compatible file shares, so you would need to set up an FTP server for transferring files. Mac OS X would make the process much simpler as it has support for multiple types of file shares, including Samba shares (Windows-compatible). Could you also give us more information about the printer? How it is connected to the network (through the router or the Windows machine)? A TCP/IP networked printer may need to be accessed differently than a Samba printer (connected to a Windows machine).

Re: Need help connecting G3 to network
I believe it is OS 9, but will check the next time I get to the office. File sharing is not as important as being able to access the printer from both machines.
The Printer is an HP 9330 All-In-One that is set up as TCP/IP and connected to the WIN XP machine through a wired router. All I need now is to be able to connect the Apple G3 to the router. |

Re: Need help connecting G3 to network
Okay! I have that information now. We have OS 9.1 on the Apple G3 computer. What now?
Again: File sharing is not as important as being able to access the printer from both machines, but if I can file share t5hat would be nice. Re: Need help connecting G3 to network
Well, are you sure on the printer number? I went to HP's site and it doesn't have it listed. If the printer is connected to the router, then it should have nothing to do with the Windows PC. What you need to do is see if there are OS 9 drivers for that printer on the disk that came with it. If so, then you'll be able to print to it. If there are not any, they I'd say you are out of luck, unless someone knows how to get OS 9 to print to a Windows shared printer. But to connect the Mac to the network, just plug the network cable in, and then goto the Apple menu>Control Panel>TCP/IPc, and there you should be able to tell it to get the IP address automatically via a use DHCP option.

Re: Need help connecting G3 to network
I'm so sorry! The printer is an HP 3390 not a 9330. Talk about transposing digits, or maybe just a memory burp.
Thanks for the answer. I'll give it a try after church sometime today. |

Re: Need help connecting G3 to network
I tried again to get the Apple G3 running OS 9.1 connected to the network. I was able to get the TCP/IP to use the DHCP option but had to input the IP address. Then it found all the addresses it needed. From what I see it must have communicated with the Router, but I can't see the Apple computer on the My Network Places of the PC and cannot see the PC on the LAN services.
Should I be using Apple Talk? Unfortunately the Disk that came with the HP Printer will not run under OS 9.1. We do have OS 10 but will have to remove lots of programs and files to have room to install OS 10. We sure would like to have a large enough hard drive to be able to accommodate OS 10 but with only 500mb free on a 6gb hard drive it doesn't fit. Until we can find a place to backup the system as it currently exists we don't want to install OS 10. We sure can't lose everything we have on the machine if the installation fails. So, I need to know if there is help getting the networking to function correctly. We're told that the Apple computer had at one time been connected to a Gateway PC using Appletalk. How would that be possible? |
