OS: OS9.1
|
I'm on a G3 with OS 9.1. I can hardly use a browser that works.
At this point, Mozilla Beta 1.2.1 is all I can use, and it doesn't work on some websites, and crashes often. I can't even go to att.com to change my phone plan. I put in the required area code+prefix, click submit, and it returns with the same screen with the numbers I placed in now gone, and just leaves me in an endless loop where I can't do anymore. I can't view most videos at all, as the Plug-ins are not present, and I can't download them anyway. I have other problems, like if I try to download a program or file, it will ask me which application do I want to use to download the file. I'm lost on this one. I used to use IE 5.1 part of the time, but somehow the Microsoft Office stuff either got corrupted, or there is something else wrong. I don't know if TechTool or a defrag could be responsible, but when I launch any Office program, it simply stops and goes nowhere. This has stopped me from launching Outlook Express, so all the folders and emails I have, I cannot get to. Luckily some of them are on the Earthlink Web Mail that I import from. Can anyone help me? Do I need Microsoft Office 2001 discs? I'm thinking the only way to solve this is to reinstall Office 2001, which I don't have discs for. Even then, I guess I'll lose all Outlook Express files. I also have ICAB, which works for some sites, not others, and is very slow. Netscape 6.2 crashes on me, and is almost identical to Mozilla. I know the ultimate solution is to get a new computer, but I need to get by at this time. Plus, I'm on dialup, which almost makes using a new Mac impossible, due to the speed needed for the constant updating they do, plus I don't know if new Macs will work on dial up. Thanks, anyone. I'm in Chicago area. |

Re: OS 9.1 Browser Problems - Big Time
New Macs will work fine on dialup, you may just have to only let them update when you goto bed if you want to do updates. Being it is a G3, you can buy the OS X 10.3 install CDs from ebay and go from there. Even if Outlook doesn't open, you should still be able to import the mail into Apple's Mail.app to read it. OS 9.1 is so far behind that it is really impossible to keep up with it in today's world. You will be finding that more and more things will not work anymore on the web. I don't know anything about Office 2001, so I can't tell you what is wrong with it. But what I do know about Macs in general, reinstalling Office most likely will not fix the problem, as many times the things you describe are due to a corrupt preference or config file, and Microsoft never did put those in the standard location, so I have no idea where to look to check them.
