Airport (snow) works w/ethernet, not wireless

I've had uninterrupted internet connection for a network of Imac, PowerPC, and Compaq PC's via my airport for a year. Then the kids wanted to add xbox live so I bought a router. The cable modem connected to the router WAN, the airport Wan connected to a router LAN, the Compaq to the airport LAN, and the xbox to a router LAN. An Imac and a power PC connected wirelessly via airport card and PCI card respectively. Everything worked until I tried to hide the Ethernet cable for the xbox in the wall. I reconnected everything and nothing worked. I'm told I may have a dead router, so I connected the airport back up to the cable modem to restore internet connection temporarily. I finally got it to connect for the IMAC, but only when using Ethernet, not via airport--I get a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx IP address using airport card (yes I reconfigured network prefs, etc., and reset the airport, powercycled everything, etc). When connected via the ethernet/airport/modem, the IP is 204.xxx.xxx.xxx.
Any ideas?

Are you sure you set the AirPort up to be a DHCP server?

Re: Airport (snow) works w/ethernet, not wireless

I'm pretty sure I did. Now, in spite of an airport status indicator of being connected to the wireless airport network, I can't scan and find the base station in airport administration assistant to verify that. This is with the IMAC about 2 feet from the airport base station.
