OS: os x10.3

trying to install os 9.1 on an old g3

I have just bought an old G3 tower [300mhz] from ebay just to run an old copy of cubase vst. The computer had OSX10.4 but cubase will only work with os 9. I have the original software install discs from a g3 imac which I have been trying to use to install 9.1 onto this g3 tower.

I'm starting up with the install disc by holding down the 'c' key but when I try to run the software installer I get an error message telling me the firmware is out of date and can be found in the cd extras folder. I can't see anything obvious in the extras folder that I should install. Does any one have an idea what this problem is?

I have initialised the HD so there is nothing on there at all now, so I can't see why OS 9 want install.

Any help would be great.

Re: trying to install os 9.1 on an old g3

in order to install os 9 or os x the firmware has to up to date. so if its has 10.4, i'm not sure how they got it on. is it a blue and white g3? i have one and it took me for ever to get it to working too. you have to have an os 8.6 install cd. and with it install os 8.6 on the hard drive. then put in the os 9 install cd and find the firmware updater and follow its instructions. once its done, you can boot from the os 9 cd and install it.
if you can't find the firmware updaters on the cd (which may be the case if it is fact an imac install cd), then you may have to download them from apple's website and keep them on an usb drive.
