New IMacs, Leopard. What do you say?

I am looking at buying my own mac for December, which is good because the new Imacs just came out.

I'm just wondering what your experience with the new Imacs and Leopard has been. One of my co-workers bought 2 and says he couldn't get them to burn disks. I dunno if this is his personal problem or whether the new computers are buggy. Plus I've heard mixed things about Leopard.

So if you think this new stuff is great, terrible, or just mediocre, please let me know. It's a big purchase and I want to make sure I'm happy with what I get.

Thanks again.

Re: New IMacs, Leopard. What do you say?

i have leopard installed on a extra hard drive in my g4 desktop and disk partition on ibook just to try it out. i use the ibook for school, and so didn't want to do a switch over mid semester, so in mid december, i'll be switching it over. and the desktop has no free drive space, so as soon as i buy a bigger hard drive to copy everything to, it'll switch over to leopard. but i love it. its great.
i have not heard of any burning issues with the new imacs, so i'd like to know how they were trying to do it, and what media they were using. i'd say that if you can afford it, its a great buy. i sure wish i could.

ya, i read that yesterday. but unless your in graphic design, its not an issue. i personally know 2 guys with these things, and they don't have any of these issues on theirs. and i have not had any issues with leopard yet.

Re: New IMacs, Leopard. What do you say?

The majority of negative articles/posts I've read about Leopard seemed to be trying to find problems. I've even found people complaining about Time Machine, which really is an awesome backup system. I only had a couple of small problems when upgrading to Leopard, but they were easy to fix. I'm running Leopard on a MacBook Pro with no problems. I'd have to see (and probably mess with) the computers that specifically have problems before I'd say it's a problem with the machine or Leopard.

Re: New IMacs, Leopard. What do you say?

The problems aren't in Leopard so much as it's Leopard causing problems with metal iMacs because it has heavier use of graphics than Tiger. Originally, the problem with iMac's shutting down was thought to be a programming problem but now it appears that it has to do with heat....probably the video card.

Don't be surprised it Apple doesn't under clock the card to fix the problem.

Re: New IMacs, Leopard. What do you say?

It is hard to deal with the heat dissipation of all-in-one comps, but I was referring to how many articles I've seen that complain about other issues. I've seen people complain that you need a second drive to use Time Machine and other ridiculous arguments.

I still want to check out the iMacs for myself. Probably will do that as soon as my friend at another college is on break, since he has a fully loaded iMac with Leopard.

Re: New IMacs, Leopard. What do you say?

My wife has a G5 iMac and it gets so hot that when you take a CD out of it, you can barely hold it.

The hard drive went in two years on the G5 and I blame it on heat. There is an article on the Internet showing how to build a homemade heat sink for hard drives in G5 iMacs. The author claims that the case of his hard drive reached 192F!

I think the problems with the metal iMacs will eventually be resolved like they were with the Mac Book Pro. What's frustrating is how Apple stonewalls people who are having problems. Instead of admitting they have a problem they pretend there is nothing wrong until they get it fixed.

I was going to buy a 24" iMac but I've changed my mind. They are simply too thin just like the Mac Book Pros are too thin.

I have an IBM Thinkpad T60 laptop that never gets hot or even very warm. It also came with a three year warranty and is backed by IBM service in Raleigh (not India).
