Mistake [SOLVED] Help! New Drive. Big important folder just vanishes!

Hi. This is my first post.

Craziest thing just happened...

Turned on my brand new G-Tech G-Drive. Drag a folder over from my internal drive (an important folder at that). Instead of a plus or other icon attachment to indicate copying vs. moving, I see a cloud drawing superimposed on the folder icon.

I let go of the folder and the cloud goes poof---up in smoke. The file folder has vanished without a trace. It seems like I completely deleted this folder. It is not on the original drive and not on the new drive.

I since copied a single unimportant file to the G-Drive and I got the regular "copy" plus-sign icon. It moved over fine.

Does anyone know what this is, and most important is my important folder somewhere???

Thank you in advance.

Hi and welcome to TSF.
Have you looked in the recycle bin?

Yes. I'm on a Mac and looked in the trash. Nothing there.

I was hoping perhaps there is a secret partition on the G-Drive where file is, but honestly, the way the folder disappeared, there was no indication of it copying over (no progress bar for even a millisecond). Usually I would see a progress bar for moving to trash too. This just---poof, disappeared.

I don't know how the Mac OS operates I'm afraid. It might be better if I move this thread to Mac support.

Re: Help! New Drive. Big important folder just vanishes!

John,

I figured out my problem and I feel really foolish!

It is a Mac thing. The file didn't disappear. There is a main level of sorts in OSX for the navigation windows. I dragged the folder off of there and what I really was doing was removing it from the list, not moving or deleting the actual file. I think it's like removing a shortcut from the taskbar in Windows.

I was fooled because the cloud action occurred as I released the folder over the harddrive window. I assumed it was the harddrive!

Thanks for your attention to my problem and the time you spent.

I'm also glad to know there is a Mac forum. I am brand new to this board and as you can tell, I could probably use it!

Best,

mtuch

LOL. Don't feel foolish. We've all got the t-shirt. I'm glad you've got it sorted and that your file isn't lost. Now that you've found the forum, I hope you'll stick around. Why not go and say hello in the Introductions forum ?
