Trying to figure out the specs on this Macbook, can I get some help
Someone is selling this Macbook to my sister for $1,000 with a nice printer.
But I want to check the specs and ask if you guys think it's a good deal, I've never used a mack before so I don't know how to find that out. Is there and online thing I can do that'll give me the specs? Thanks for replying. Last edited by W00DR0W; 10-06-2007 at 12:52 PM. |

Re: Someone is selling this Macbook to my sister for $1,000, can she get a better dea
how old is it? a new one with that ram and cpu cost only $99 more, or you can get a refurb from apple (that carries the same warranty as a new mac) for $50 less. and if its a macbook, then its got a 13" screen. if it were me, i'd personally get one from apple for around the same price and know that it has a 1 year warranty. they are great laptops for everyday use. sure, you can find cheaper ones from dell or hp, but imho apple makes a much better hardware/software package and i think the macbooks are a great deal. if the macbook works, still has some warranty time left, and has the original restore cds with it, tell you sister not to spend more than $750 on it. if the guy won't go that low, then have her just get one from apple.
-edit, after the merge- the ram isn't flash, its ddr2. and 1gig is fine for normal use. what does she plan on doing with this thing? also to find out more about the macbook, goto that same about this mac window you looked at, and then click on the button that says more info, now you'll get all the info you could want to know about the macbook. just click on the section you want more info on in the left pane and the details will show up in the right pane.

Thanks for the advice.
But it still won't say the HDD space, all I care about is if it's atleast 12gigs; it's gotta be at least that much HDD space right? |

This is not a good deal at all.
This is a first generation Intel machine with only one processor. The new ones have dual Core Duo processors hence the Core Duo 2 designation. Buy the new one. It also has some other upgrades. |

sorry, nick, but the 2 in core duo means that its version 2. the duo means its has dual cpus. the single cores were called core solos. as far as the hard drive, it will be at least 80gig in size. to find out for sure, highlight the hard drive icon on the desktop, goto the menu file>get info and a window will pop up telling you the drive size, space used andd free space.

Re: Someone is selling this Macbook to my sister for $1,000, can she get a better dea
I stand corrected. Both the CD original and CD2's are single processors, dual core of which the Intel MacBooks have two, but the point I was trying to drive home is still correct.
That price is way too high unless it is a CD2 machine and even then the entry level Macbook is $1099. MacMall and some other places are offering some discounts to move out old stock. Thanks for the clarification. |

Re: Someone is selling this Macbook to my sister for $1,000, can she get a better dea
I'd recommend looking at what you can get from Apple for the same amount. sinclair_tm's posts cover most of what I'd say, so I'll just second all of that.
Another thing I'd like to point out is that the Core Duo is still a 32 bit processor, while the Core 2 Duo is an actual 64 bit processor. Many users won't notice a huge difference right now, but operating systems are moving to 64 bit, so the Core 2 Duo will be better to have in the future. Mac OS X already supports 64 bit software and is continuing to move in that direction. You'd still do fine with a Core Duo, but I wouldn't buy a machine with one for nearly the same price as the newer Core 2 Duo machines. Basically, like sinc said, don't spend too much on it. If the seller won't drop the price, the MacBooks from Apple have a warranty, are new (or refurb'd) at about the price for that used one. You can get newer technology for about the same cost, plus it will have a warranty (very important for laptops - from any company) since it's from Apple. Apple's refurb machines are also a decent option.

Re: Someone is selling this Macbook to my sister for $1,000, can she get a better dea
While I agree with everything you said. (Most importantly, buy a new machine instead), here is an interesting bench test against the AMD 64 3800+, which I have in my desktop.
I also have the CD single and I think the AMD blows it away. That could be due to my high end graphics card, but even in non-intensive graphic situations, it way outperforms the Mac. It's nice to see some good Mac responses on this forum. Apple's forum is a little too overpopulated with Kool-Aid drinkers. Best Regards to all, Nick |

well, ya, a high power desktop will almost always beat a laptop. but unless you need lots of power, then a macbook will be great.
