Can't upgrade to X 4.2.8
I used the Mac updater in the preferences folder and it updated everything okay, except for the OS X upgrade. I use dial-up so it took all night and had to sign on and resume the download several times. When it seemed the d.l. was complete (the shimmering progress bar turned solid), it just doesn't seem to be doing anything. Does it have to stay online throughout the process? - because it complains when I sever the connection.
Any ideas? Thanks! -Andy |

with your connection, i would not sue the os x updater. instead, goto apple's support site and download the stand alone os x updater, and then run that. most likely if you had to keep reconnecting during the download, the package got messed up.

Yes, but...
I tried that first and when I tried to run the stand-alone updater, it said the program couldn't be run on that computer. I will redownload the file at work (over DSL) and try the install again.
By the way, since the Mac thinks the download has been complete, where is that file fragment located, so I can go delete it? -Andy |

good question, i'll have to look to see if i can figure that out.
second, did you make sure that you got the right updater? there are 2 different updates, one for the ppc (g3/g4/g5) macs, and the one for intel macs. you must get the correct update for the mac, or it will not work. also, get the 10.4.8 combo updater (not sure what you mean by a 4.2.8, as there isn't one. i missed that before in my last post.).

I'm confused...
...I've been getting my versions mixed up. Thank you so much for your patience. Here's what I have; please tell me how far I can upgrade, and how:
iBook, 640MB mem., 500MHz PowerPC G3, Mac OS C 10.2 (Leopard, by the looks of the install disks). BTW, will it take more memory? I'd like to use this as the drive controller and imager for my telescope. What about a higher-capacity battery? This one drains in just over 2 hours (playing a DVD or other high-draw activities). Again, thanks for your time. You've been extremely helpful to a recovering PC-user. -Andy P.S. I'm sure I will have more questions. |

well, 10.1 is puma, 10.2 is jaguar, 10.3 is panther, 10.4 is tiger, and 10.5 is leopard (which is not out yet). to upgrade, you have to pay to go from one cat to the next ( ie. 10.2 to 10.3 ). but there are free updates within each revision ( ie 10.4.2 to 10.4.8 ). with your ibook, it can run tiger, but it'd be slow. 10.3 would be the best for that ibook, which would upgrade to 10.3.9. but if you have 10.2 on it, then you will have to find a used copy of 10.3 in order to upgrade. owc is a great place to get copys of older os x install disks. and they sell batteries foor it too with better rateings then the stock battery, but about 2hr of dvd watching is going to be about the max you'll get anyway. as for the ram, thats the max that the ibook can see. as for controlling your telescope, make sure there's mac software that can do it.

Thanks so much for your research & wisdom!
I will stick with 10.2 and upgrade it as much as possible within the cat. I really have nothing to complain about, since the iBook runs flawlessly! It just won't run some of the software I'd like: Openoffice.org only runs on 10.3 or later, etc... One other thing, I still can't get OS 9 (Classic Mode) to work on the iBook. It says: "No Classic system folder: there is no volume with a system folder that supports starting classic. Please install Mac OX 9.1 or later to run Classic." Now, I have the OS 9 disk which, when inserted and run (Install Mac OS 9.1), prompts this message: "There are no localized Classic-specific resources to update the selected system folder, "/Mac OS 9.1/System Folder". Please select another system folder from Classic Preferences." I run Classic Preferences and the "System Folder" in the Mac OS 9.1 folder is selected, but Classic won't run. Any ideas? As a side note: What is the deal with Extensions off/on? Thanks for your patience and all the great advice you're giving in this Forum! -Andy |

in order for os 9 to work in classic, os x has to add some files to it, and it can't add files to a cd, which is why it doesn't work. you will have to boot the computer from the cd, and try installing it, but that may mess up your os x install.
as for the extentions off/on, that sets classic to either run with or without extentions (same as holding down the shift key back in the day). its to help troubleshoot classic if it keeps crashing.

Thanks for the advice, sinclair_tm! I guess I should just leave well enough alone. There's only one program I'd really like to have for Classic mode and it's just a Star Trek sim. I do not want to risk the OS for one silly game.
One thing: did you ever find where those fragmented downloads go? I'm going to do a little searching also. I'll let you know if I find it. Thanks again. You've been extremely helpful and patient. I will continue to recommend this forum to EVERYONE! -Andy (Cloud Nights Forum ID: andyenglish) |
