General Airport Question
I am getting a new MacBook. I have a iMac with a cable internet connection with no Airport card. My new MacBook does have a airport card. I was wondering, in order to wirelessly connect to the internet from my MacBook through my cable internet connection. Does my iMac have to have a airport card? Thank you.

depends. you can either add wireless to your imac, and have it share its internet with the macbook over airport, or you can get router with wireless and plug the imac into it with the cable, and then set the router up to connect to the macbook wirelessly. me personally would go with the router. a simple 4 port netgear router with wireless goes for about 40usd, which is far cheaper than adding wireless to the imac.

depends on the router. i am assumeing that you have sercured the router, using wep encription, as well as MAC address filtering on the wireless so as to keep unwanted others off your network. 1st, open the network utility app in your utility folder in the appication folder. make sure the info tab is selected. from the pull down menu select your airport card. in the box under the pull down menu it will list the connection's info. write down the hardware address, as this is the MAC address. now log into your router from the imac, and goto the filtering settings. you should have it set up to only allow the listed MAC addresses to connect. now just add the macbook's MAC address, and save the settings and log out. now the macbook should be able to sure wirelessly.

that info is in the owners manual of the router. on most, you type in the router's ip address in your web browser, and then navigate the router's settings like a web page.
