Corrupted Hard Drive
A few days ago I recieved the Ubuntu Linux CD's I had ordered and tried the Live CD liked how it felt so I made a new partition on my hard drive to install it on.
After I installed it I tried to go back into Windows XP and recieved an error. I thought it was something to do with Ubuntu and XP being installed on the same drive so I deleted the partition with Ubuntu on it hoping to solve my problem. After that failed I asked one of my friends about it and they recommended I remake the partition and reinstall XP there. It was installing when it came up and told me it could not complete installation due to C: (my primary partition with all my files on it) was corrupted. Right now I'm using the Live Ubuntu CD, and if there is anyway that I can save a few files mostly pictures and the such would you please tell me? Thanks |

Hi dawgs72, and welcome to TSF. You do not specify in your post, but I suspect your XP installation software is an OEM version. Many of those will only install if the hard drive size matches the machine's original hardware compliment. And that is easily fooled when the partition has been altered. Unfortunately, Ubuntu doesn't browse any windows partitions on the machine, either when installed or when run live. If you can get your hands on a Knoppix CD, you should at least be able to browse the windows partition, and subsequently the files within. That may allow you to save small files to floppies, and if you happen to have two CD drives, and one is a burner, you might be able to burn a CD using the K3b application in Knoppix. That takes a lot of ram to make that happen though. In order to re-install XP, you will need to remove all existing partitions from your hard drive using the fdisk utility. You may need to remove the partitions, exit fdisk, reboot, fdisk again, making sure no partitions are found, before XP will install. XP then will create a new partition as needed, then format, and install. This unfortunately will remove all things you had saved on your drive.
