Linux on old laptop

A friend gave me an old Gateway laptop that he was going to throw away. It had Win 98 on it. The computer has a 6 Gig hd 64 meg ram with a cd/dvd rom. I was wondering if there was a linux distro that could run with just 64 meg of ram. I tried a livecd of DSL but couldn't get the display so I could see it. Knoppix wanted more ram and so did PclinuxOs.

i think that's the DSL live cd they mentioned trying.

honestly, mandrake should do fine on that machine, i've had it running on 64 megs ram before.

the thing that really bothers me, is that knoppix and DSL can both run with 64 megs, but they always suggest more.

which versions of knoppix and DSL did you use, possibly they are too new.

we can work this out, i am sure of it.

*goes and gets my bag of tricks [cd case with waaayyyy to many different versions of linux])* If you know command line really well TSL (Trustix Security Linux) should work. Also, Deli Linux was made for older PC's. I've never gotten Trinux to work, but that might be an option as well. Basic Linux is another one to look into, it is made for pc's with low RAM.

Here is a site of "mini" distributions (like DSL) some might work, others might not. try some and see.
